Abstract

482,233. Luminescent screens. SCHERINC - KAHLBAUM AKT.-GES. May 24, 1937, Nos. 14391 and 14392. Convention dates, May 28, 1936 and Nov. 7, 1936. [Class 98 (i)] Screens for X-ray work, luminescent signs, &c. containing zinc sulphide are rendered more resistant to deterioration due to daylight or atmospheric influence by treating the luminescent layer after its formation with an alkali silicate solution, e.g. a 3-25 per cent solution of water glass, which may be rendered alkaline as by adding 5-20 per cent of alkali hydroxide solution, and thereafter superficially rinsing the layer to remove the silicate. The screen layer, containing the luminescent material in a binder such as cellulose nitrate lacquer, cellulose acetate lacquer, resin or a polystyrene, may be first formed on a glass plate, from which it is stripped and immersed for several hours in the treating bath, which must be rendered alkaline for a layer having a polystyrene binder. After treatment, the layer is rinsed with water, dried, and mounted on a pasteboard, artificial resin, or like base. In examples, the treatment of a zinc-cadmiumsulphide screen in a cellulose nitrate lacquer or polystyrene binder, is described.
