Abstract

In moulding thin-walled tubes, shells or plates of non-ductile, refractory material by applying to a core a thin layer of a paste of the refractory material with a binder, heating until the layer is rigid, and removing the core, the binder is a synthetic resin dissolved in a non-aqueous solvent. The binder may be a synthetic resin varnish such as those known under the Registered Trade Marks "Glyptal" or "Bakelite." After removing the core, as by heating, the rigid material may be heated further as for sintering. The refractory material may be a metal such as tungsten, chromium or iridium, or a metal oxide such as alumina or zirconia or a mixture of zirconia and thoria, or a refractory carbide. The oxide may be generated on heating in oxygen where the metal is incorporated in the paste. The core may be wound with a fine wire of a refractory metal such as molybdenum before, during or after applying the paste layer and so as to act as a reinforcement. The core may be a paper tube or a solid carbon rod and is removed by heating. The paper may be blotting paper and may be formed by wrapping around a rod, pasting the edges and securing with thread. If the temperature required is not too high, the core may be a glass tube coated with wax. The tubes or plates may be used for resistors or condenser dielectrics. According to the Provisional Specification, the binder may be starch or other aqueous solution, the tubes may be used as inner sheaths in high-pressure, metal-vapour lamps, and Specification 477,105 is therein referred to.
