Abstract
125,088. Besozzi, C. April 27, 1915, [Convention date]. Fibrous tubes.-Consists in making a casing for the explosive charge of a projectile from cardboard by (1) coating it with a starchy gelatinous mixture, (2) bending it into a cylinder, and, after the edges have been joined together, shaping by means of suitable dies and rollers, (3) after reinforcing the tapered end with cardboard, dipping the shaped case into a heated bath of vegetable or mineral oils and colophony, (4) drying, heating for several hours, polishing, and varr, ishing. The cardboard, made from hemp fibres and absorbent material, is first cut into rectangular sheets. After coating, the edges of the sheet are recessed, and united bv means of an adhesive when the sheet has been rolled around a cylindrical core 1, Fig. 3. The core with the cardboard cylinder a on it is then drawn through a tube 2 by means of mechanism such as that shown, the tube being heated by a gas-ring 6. In order to taper the end of the cylinder, it is subjected to treatment by corrngated rollers 8, Fig. 4. The subsequent moulding of the case is effected by the apparatus shown in Fig. 6, comprising a former 10 and a die 13 having a knife 15 to cut off superfluous material. After dipping in the bath of oil and colophony, the case is dried at the ordinary temperature for 24 hours, and then heated for 6 hours to 120- 125 in an oven, where it becomes like wood.
