Abstract

1,234,717. Hollow glass fibres. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Sept., 1969 [12 Sept., 1968], No. 44772/69. Heading C1M. A method of manufacturing a channel plate for use in a channel multiplier which includes the steps of heating a glass tube or hollow glass fibre, drawing it downwardly, cutting the resultant tubes into lengths, assembling and fusing the lengths to form a bundle, and slicing the bundle to obtain channel plates, which method is characterized in that during the drawing process a fluid is fed into the bores of the tube at such a pressure that the wall thickness of the tubes decreases gradually during the draw. The method is carried out by drawing a tube 1 through an electric furnace 2 by means of a roller 4 while a gas such as nitrogen or air is fed from a cylinder 5. The gas pressure may be from 2 to 8 millibars and preferably 5 millibars. When the tubes are assembled they may be sealed at both ends and heated so that the increase of pressure of air within the tubes causes a reduction in the sizes of the interstices between the tubes. In a modification the tubes may be coated with a low melting point glaze, heating a bundle of tubes in a jig so that adjacent tubes adhere, and subjecting the bundle to a second draw to form a multi-fibre.
