Abstract

Porous rubber having pores of controlled size is obtained by milling into a crude natural or synthetic rubber mix, e.g. derived from ethylene polysulphide, grains of a substance which is insoluble in cold water, convertible into a soluble substance by the action of heat, enzymes or a chemical reagent, and capable of resisting attrition on normally-spaced milling rolls, converting the grains during or after vulcanization into water-soluble form without permitting them to swell materially, and leaching the converted grains out of the rubber. Suitable grains are those of starch, albumen, meat fibrin, or a lime-casein reaction product. Battery separators and reinforced filter sheets may be made of the product.ALSO:Porous rubber having pores of controlled size is obtained by milling into a crude natural or synthetic rubber mix grains of a substance which is insoluble in cold water, convertible into a soluble substance by heat, enzymes or treatment with a chemical reagent, and is capable of resisting attrition on normally-spaced milling rolls, converting the grains during or after vulcanization into water-soluble form without permitting them to swell materially, and leaching the converted grains out of the rubber. Suitable grains are those of starch, albumen, meat fibrin or a lime-casein reaction product. Articles such as grooved battery separators and filter sheets having a perforated metallic reinforcement between two sheets of the rubber may be made by the process.
