Abstract

481,361. Cowling &c. fastenings. BINKS, C. L., and AMAL, Ltd. Sept. 7, 1936, Nos. 24428/36, 12299/37, and 24055/37. [Class 44] A fastening device for detachably securing a cowling 1 to an aircraft fuselage 14 comprises a longitudinally 'slotted tubular member 2 rotatably carried by the cowling, and shown as having a countersunk head seating in a washer 11, a cross-member 9 being slidable in the slots and urged towards the inner face of the cowling by a spring 10 housed in member 2. The member 9 is adapted to pass through an elongated slot 16, members 2, 9 then being rotated through a right-angle by screw-driver or like tool to dispose member 9 transversely across slot 16, member 9 being retained against accidental release movement by projections 17. As shown slot 16 and projections 17 are provided on a fitting 13 secured to the fuselage 14. Member 9 has a recess 12 engaged by the end of spring 10 to prevent lateral withdrawal from the slots in member 2. In a modification the cross member comprises a central boss slidable in the bore of member 2 and having radial arms projecting through the slots. A stud, screwed into the boss and riveted, serves to fill the outer end of the box, the outer end of the stud being flush when the fastener is in securing position but projecting slightly in the release position. The slot 16 may be open-ended, Fig. 9, to allow lateral disengagement of the cowling &c., and the fastening device may be mounted on a hinged member biassed by spring to move away from cowling and fuselage when released.
