[Class 53] A dry cell comprises a carbon electrode 6, in the form of a plate having flat surfaces on each of which is a block of depolarizer 8 surrounded by electrolyte and a zinc electrode 11 so constructed that it can be, contracted against the inner elements of the cell. As shown in Fig. 4, the carbon electrode may comprise a metal plate coated on both sides with carbonaceous material and provided with a coating of varnish or other insulating material 7 on its edges. The depolarizer blocks 8 may be provided with cavities to allow for expansion and to receive gases generated in the cell. The carbon electrode and depolarizer are enclosed in a paper or other wrapping 10 impregnated with electrolyte. The zinc electrode surrounds the wrapping 10 and is in the form of a cylinder having a gap between'the edges or having overlapping' edges. The electrode may be made from a zinc sheet which is pressed into two half-cylindrical portions 11, as shown in Fig. 4. The sheet is cut through as shown at 13, a part 12 being left to form a hinge, and a projecting lug 17 being provided to form a terminal. The parts 11 are clamped together by a rubber band 16 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cell is closed at the bottom by a rubber disc 14. The top of the cell may be closed by a rubber disc 14. The top of the cell may be closed by a similar disc and the whole assembly may be sealed by a thin elastic and waterproof skin.
