727,536. Batteries. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Olin Industries, Inc.). April 27, 1953, No. 11589/53. Class 53. A dry cell is provided with a cover 12 having two depending flanges 13, 14 which extend into sealing material 7 supported on a washer 6 held in place by a bead 5 on the zinc cup 1. The flanges 13, 14 are so shaped that the sealing material 7 can penetrate between them and the zinc and carbon electrodes 1, 2. The cell is enclosed in a fibrous insulating jacket 10 of which the inner layers are absorbent while the outer layers resist the penetration of electrolyte so that if the cup 1 becomes perforated no electrolyte will escape to the exterior of the cell. The terminal at the bottom of the cell is formed by a tin-plated steel or other metal plate 8 which is secured to the lower end of the jacket 10. In a modification the terminal comprises two thicknesses of metal. The upper ends of the cup 1 and jacket 10 are folded over at 18 to engage in a groove in the cover 12, or the cup and jacket may be folded to lie on a flat edge formed on the cover. Gases evolved in the cell can escape through the porous carbon rod 2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 604,458.
