Abstract

680,697. Batteries; electrolytic condensers. MALLORY BATTERIES, Ltd. April 2, 1951, No. 7556/51. Classes 37 and 53. A primary or secondary cell or electrolytic condenser is provided with a casing consisting of two cup-shaped members 10, 14 separated by an insulating washer 19, the three parts being held together by an outer casing 23, the upper edge 26 of which is crimped over the washer 19. The cell is normally gas-tight, but excessive internal pressure causes a small downward movement of the cup 14 whereby gas can escape between the flange 15 of the cup 14 and the washer 19 and pass into the space 27 between the members 14, 23 and out through an aperture 24. The space 27 may contain absorbent material such as paper or a metal such as lead to retain any electrolyte or mercury carried over with the gas. In a modification, the cup 14 and casing 23 are in loose contact over their whole surfaces, escaping gas finding its way between the walls of the cup and casing and through an aperture in the bottom. In this construction the casing 23 may be in the form of a cylinder open at the bottom. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the outer casing is replaced by a band 522 spotwelded to the cup 514 and crimped over the washer 519. Gas escapes between the band and cup. The invention is shown in Fig. 1 applied to a cell comprising amalgamated copper and steel dish-shaped members 10, 14 enclosing zinc powder 12, porous layers 18 impregnated with a solution of caustic potash containing a zincate, and a depolarizer 16 consisting of a mixture of mercury oxide and graphite. The layers 18 may be replaced by caustic potash solution gelatinized with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
