Abstract

35 to 50 parts by weight of pulverized spent oil shale are added to 65 to 50 parts of tar or bitumen or both, and the mixture is heated to a temperature between 90 and 120 DEG C., to produce a tar &c. having increased viscosity at temperatures below 80 DEG C. but not substantially increased viscosity at temperatures between 80 and 120 DEG C. and having also increased adhesiveness, speed of drying and resistance to "sweating" of moisture and to ageing. The shale may pass a 200 mesh sieve. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use, instead of spent oil shale, of bituminous stone, calcareous and bituminous clays, clays containing "distillable products," and the "waste products of the mining industry, of coal and ore washing and of combustion." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
