Abstract

<PICT:0480981/III/1> Apparatus for conditioning cashew nuts, preparatory to the extraction of oil from the shells thereof by heat-treatment of the whole nuts in an oil bath, comprises means b whereby the nuts are automatically surface-wetted, an elevator or conveyer a for carrying the nuts from the wetting means, a bin or receptacle e to which the nuts are fed by the elevator and in which they are allowed to stand for a predetermined time, and a second elevator or conveyer f which receives the nuts from the base of the bin or receptacle e and forwards them either to the hopper or shoot r of the heat-treatment plant, or to one or more further bins e and associated delivery elevators, the last of which feeds the heat-treatment plant. The wetting means b comprises a tank through which the lower part of the elevator a passes, and to which the nuts are fed from a hopper c. The buckets a1 of the elevator a are perforated to allow drainage of the water. A rotary trommel j having a cylindrical surface built up from longitudinal spaced bars may be provided between the apparatus and the hopper or shoot r of the heat-treatment plant.
