Abstract
<PICT:0480950/IV/1> <PICT:0480950/IV/2> The streams of solution discharged from nozzles 2a into a strong electric field are collected in the form of filamentary material on spaced charged elements 4a, for example, on the pointed ends 4b of the bar-like elements carried by a travelling band 4 or by a wheel. By this arrangement the removal of solvent is facilitated and at the same time adhesion of adjacent filaments is prevented. The sliver so collected is continuously stripped from the collector by means of a plate 8 notched to engage the elements 4a and to be driven by them, the axis of the plate being inclined and the plate being positioned so that the sliver is withdrawn from the points of the elements and wound up on a reel 9; alternatively, the sliver may be attached by means of air jets. A second set of nozzles 2a and collecting elements 4b may be arranged on the opposite side of the band 4. The nozzles, or the solution, are connected to one pole of the high tension generator 3, and the other pole is connected either to a discharge element 7 forming a spark gap or directly to the band. A charged screen 10 above the nozzles assists in guiding the filaments to the collecting electrodes 4b; other means to prevent the escape of filaments are the use of a warm atmosphere in the spinning room or a current of hot air flowing in the direction of spinning. A suitable spinning solution consists of cellulose acetate dissolved in acetone and monomethylether of ethylene glycol; in order that the solution may be reasonably good electrical conductor, 2-3 per cent of water may be added; it is important that the viscosity of the solution be suitably adjusted. British Specification 364,780 and U.S.A. Specifications 705,619 and 745,276 are referred to.
