Abstract

480,902. Gas - producers; furnace grates. GALUSHA, A. L. Dec. 4, 1936, No. 33326. Convention date, Oct. 31. [Classes 51 (i) and 55 (i)] In a gas-producer wherein all the air supplied to the combustion zone is caused to pass over hot water, the producer is provided with means responsive to variations in the temperature of the air supplied, for controlling the temperature and moisture of the moist air supplied. Air from a blower 14 is blown over the surface of the water contained in a jacket 2 surrounding the sides and top of a producer 1 and the hot moist air resulting supplied to the producer through the grate 24 by way. of a supply pipe 20. The latter is provided with a bulb, containing an expansible fluid, which is connected by capillary tubing 40 with an expansible diaphragm 42 connected to a throttle valve 46 in a pipe 28, the latter being one of a number of branch pipes connecting a water supply pipe 26 with the jacket. Excess water in the jacket is discharged through a U-tube 36<1>. Increase of temperature in the air supply pipe acting on the thermostat 38 causes the diaphragm 42 to open the valve 46 further against a spring 48 thus increasing the flow of water to the jacket and vice versa. The air is preferably saturated with moisture, the thermostatic control then also keeping the air to water vapour ratio constant. In a modified method of working, the branch pipe 28 is closed and excess water is supplied to the jacket through a branch pipe 30, the desired temperature and moisture condition of the air being attained by a supplementary steam supply from a pipe 60 which is provided with the thermostatic control means described. The grate comprises a number of eccentrically mounted annular plates 24a ... 24d carried by a pivoted frame 24e. A scraper 27a fixed to one of the annular plates co-operates with projections 31 from the wall of the producer in breaking down ash or clinker which is thereupon forced over the annular plates of the grate.
