A valve 52 in the branch pipe prevents flow therethrough when the branch pipe is not in use and serves to regulate the flow when the branch pipe is in use. A valve 54 in the branch pipe 28 and a valve 56- in the pipe r34 serve to cut out the branch pipe 28 while vthe strainer is being cleaned. Normally the 'valves 54 and 58 are open and the valve 52 is closed. A branch pipe 32 of larger size and having a valve therein is provided in order to accomplish the initial filling of the Water jacket more rapidly.- The branch pipe 32 is kept closed during the operation. of the producer.
In service, particularly when the gas producer is being called upon to produce a large volume o1V gas continuouslyfor a considerable period, combustion of the fuel tends'to take place more rapidly adjacent the gas producer wall with a resulting accumulation of ash which, after a period of operation, tends vto reduce the amount of heat transferred to the water in the water jacket and cause a reduction in the temperature of the cooling water and a reductio-n in the amount oi steam produced. In orderto maintain a substantially constant condition of the fire with respectV to the accumulation of ash.at the gas producer wall the grate 24, which consists of annular plates 24a, 24b and 24 and a cap piece 24d, eccentrically', mounted in spaced relation on a frame 24e pivotally mounted on a suitable support 25, is provided with a scraper mounted on the grate plate 24b for preventing accumulation of ash or clinker adjacent the gas producer inner Wall l The scraper comprises a bar or member 21 secured by bolts 29 on the grate plate 24h, between projections 24I welded to the plate, and' projecting outwardly into the region of the producer wall l. At its outer end the member 21 is formed with a vertically extending portion 21a positioned at an acute angle to the wall l and cut away at its front portion to provide a cutting edge of chisel-shape having the toe closer to the producer wall than theheel. The bolts 29 securing the scraper bar 21 to the plate 24b are placed with the nuts 29a beneath the plates to permit of the removal or replacement of worn or damaged scrapers without dumping the re, it being found that the ash will arch over sufliciently to permit of the work being done.
The rotation of the scraper 21,l 21a tends to -rotate the fuel bed with the grate 24 and to prevent this rotation vertical ribs or projections 3|, projecting radially inwardly of the gas producer and having their upper end portions tapering to prevent fuel or ash lodging thereon, are welded or otherwise suitably secured to the inner face of the wall I at uniformly spaced points and at height slightly above the upper level of the vertical portion 21A of the scraper so that the projections 3l cooperate with the scraper in breaking large pieces of clinker or ash.
The angular position of the vertical portion 21a of the wall scraper tends to force the ash linwardly to be discharged over the inner edges of the grate plates and this operation is assisted by l v/saturated air at 140 spaced. slightly .below the bottom of the wall scraper 21, 21 so as to pass without interferencev the supply of steamcan be regulated vby a valve similar to valve 46 but arranged to be opened when the temperature in pipe 20 falls and vice versa. In this case water is supplied through a branch pipe having a manually controlled valve therein as the branch pipe 30 and valve 52, the
valve being kept open to such an extent that an excess of water is supplied and the air is not heated to the desired temperature in .passing through the water jacket, through pipe 60 bringing the air tothe desired temperature and moisture. As a check on the condition of the air supplied to the gas producer, a thermometer 64 of either the indicating or recording type, is provided, the air having the desired moisture so long as it is maintained at the correct temperature.
Inasmuch as the moisture air varies with changes in the air temperature,

What is claimed is: l. The combination with a gas producer having a water jacket, of means vfor heating and moistening in said water jacket all air supplied to the gas producer fire, means for supplying water to said water jacket, means forremoving ash from a wall of said water jacket to maintain water supplied to the substantially uniform conditions for the transfer of heat from the fire to said water jacket and means responsive to variations in the temperature of the air supplied for controlling said water supplying means.
2. In a gas producer having relatively rotating wall and grate, a scraper carried by said grate for removing ash from said wall, ribs on said wall abovethe path of said scraper preventing rotation of the fuel bed with the scraper and ash plows projecting inwardly beneath the path of Vsaid scraper for forcing the ash inwardly over the grate.
3. In a gas producer having a rotating grate and a fixed wall, a scraper rotating with said grate for removing ash from said wall, ribs extending vertically on said wall above the path of said scraper preventing rotation of the fuel bed with said scraper and ash plows fixed relatively to said ribs and projecting inwardly beneath the path of said scraper for forcing ash inwardly over the grate.
4. In a gas producer having relatively rotatsaid wallgabove the zone of the scraper and ash plows projecting inwardly beneath the zone of the scraper, said scraper cooperating with saidy ribs and ash plows in crushing waste pieces of clinker.
5. The combination. with a gas producer having a water-jacket, of means for supplying all air for thefgas producer iire through said waterjacket and means responsive to variations in the temperature of the air supplied to the producer tire for .maintaining constant the temperature' and moisture content of the air supplied.
6. The combination with a gas producer having a water-jacket, of means for supplying all air for the gas lproducer fire through said waterjacket vand means responsive to variations in the ltemperature of the air supplied to the producer nre for controlling the temperature of the water in the water-jacket to maintain constant the temperature and moisture content of the air sup plied to the producer fire.
7. The combination with a gas producer having a water-jacket of means for supplying al1 air for the gas producer fire through said waterjacket and means responsive to variations in the ytemperature of the air supplied for controlling the supply of-water to the water-jacket to maintain constant the temperature and moisture content of the air supplied to the producer tlre.
8. The combination with a gas producer having a water-jacket, of means for passing all air for the gas producer iire over water in. said water jacket, .means for supplying water to said water-jacket and means/responsive to variations in the temperature of the air supplied to the gas producer re for controlling the supply of water to the water-jacket to maintain constant the temperature and moisture content of the air supplied.
