Abstract
480,027. Thermal switches. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1936, No. 26445. Convention date, April 24. [Class 38-(v)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A thermal switch comprises a U-shaped contact arm 6 having knife edge bearings in pillars 7 on the metal base 1 and biassed by a tension spring 10 into engagement with a fixed contact 4. A taut wire 13 is fixed at one end to an abutment 15 and is electrically connected with the contact 4 while its other end is fixed to an adjustable abutment 16, and is electrically connected through base 1 to the movable contact arm 6. An insulating link 22 connects the wire 13 and spring 10 so that when the wire is cold the contact arm 6 is held in the open position. Current is lead in by a lead 18 and passes through wire 13 and out of a second lead (not shown) connected to the base 1. The heated wire slackens and spring 10 moves across deadcentre to snap arm 6 into engagement with contact 4. The wire 13 is then shunted and cools causing the spring 10 to move down again and open the contacts 6, 4. The switch, shown at 23, Fig. 1, is described as connected in series with the stop lights 21 of a motor vehicle, and energized through a switch 30 operated on depression of the brake pedal 31. A manual switch 32 is also provided.
