Abstract

479,336. Hinged valves. RICHARDSON, L. J. Sept. 22, 1937, No. 25652. [Class 135] A valve for controlling the flow of ore slime or other pulps containing solid matter comprises a casing having aligned flanged ends 2 and 3 for connection to pipes &c., while the intermediate portion 4 is in the form of a drum provided with flat cover plates 6 and 7, a rectangular valve seat 11 ... 14 being formed between the portions 2 and 4. A closure member 17, co-operating with the seat, is secured to a spindle 20 journalled in the plates 6, 7 and provided with operating mechanism 31, the spindle being positioned to one side of and away from the seat and the member 17 and the seat being cylindrically curved so that no sliding movement between the member 17 and the seat takes place. The drum cavity 26 on the side on which the spindle 20 lies is deeper than on the other side, and the member 17 is housed in this cavity, out of the direct passage between the casing ends, when the valve is opened, while leaving a space behind the member 17. The sudden enlargement provided by the portion 4 produces turbulence in the flow, causing accumulations of solid matter to be disturbed, while flow through the space behind the member 17 during opening movement washes away solid matter which tends to be pushed by the member 17 into that space. The casing is lined throughout with sheet rubber and the member 17 is also covered with sheet rubber. Rubber washers 27 encircle the spindle 20 between the ends of the member 17 and the plates 6 and 7.
