Abstract
479,065. Bending and shaping plywood. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.- GES. July 31, 1936, No. 21305. 'Convention date, July 31, 1935. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] [Also in Groups XVII and XVI] A bilged plywood cask having no longitudinal joint which traverses all the plies is made by shaping a number of veneers arranged crosswise and coated with adhesive such as glue and pressing the shape in a concave mould until the adhesive has set. The mould may consist of segments 1, Fig. 1, held by rings 2 to form a mould corresponding to the outer shape of the barrel and arranged concentrically around an inflatable elastic bag 3 of rubber, leather &c., which may with advantage be drawn over a rigid support 4. A cylinder consisting of the layers of veneer is placed in the former and pressure air or liquid introduced through a pipe 8. A ring 9 of wood may be glued in place during the moulding or the barrel may be notched to take the heads. In the form shown in Fig. II, a half-cask made of crossed veneers glued together is pressed by a stamp 10 in a mould 11 until the glue has hardened. The rim of one-half is then shaped conically and the rim of the other half correspondingly shaped and the two glued together. The shaping may be effected during the pressing process.
