Abstract

479,052. Elastic - fluid turbines. BURGESS, A. F. (Akt.-Ges. fiir Technische Studien) July 30, 1936, No. 21104. [Class 110 (iii)] A power plant comprises one or more turbines 3 driven by a gas, preferably air, at a pressure above atmospheric, heated in a furnace 2, the exhaust from the turbine entering a heatexchanger 7 to heat up gas compressed in a compressor 5, which is driven by a turbine but at a higher speed than the latter drives a. generator 4. A motor 45 on the compressor shaft is used for starting-up purposes. Furnace gases are passed through a heat-exchanger 18 to heat air delivered by a blower 20 to the furnace. Cooling water is circulated through a cooler 25, and also through jackets around the compressor. In a second arrangement, the turbine is arranged in two casings, the high-pressure turbine driving the compressor at a higher speed than the low-pressure turbine drives the generator. Gearing connects the two turbines. Fig. 3 shows a plant in which two high-pressure turbines 3a, 3aa, in parallel, drive two compressors 5a, 5b, which are in series. The low-pressure turbine may be arranged in two casings in parallel or series and drive one or two generators. Fig. 6 shows a radial-flow turbine with oppositely-running rotors 3a, 3b, which rotate at different speeds. A motor generator 53 is arranged on the slower shaft, and is connected to the same net as the generator 4. The slower shaft may drive auxiliary machinery.
