Abstract

478,578. Feeding webs. HOE & CO., Ltd., R. July 18, 1936, No. 19986. Convention date, July 30, 1935. [Class 100 (i)] Web-renewing mechanism for printing and other machines comprises two supports pivoted about a common axis and carrying respectively a web deflecting device and a web cutting device which, when in operative position, are spread apart longitudinally of the web, the support for the device which is further from the pivot axis being formed in two parts which can be folded together so that the mechanism occupies little space when turned into an inoperative position. The support for the web-deflecting brush 26, Figs. 3 and 11, comprises a pair of arms 31 mounted on spaced coaxial pivot shafts 28, and the support for the knife, which is normally housed between a pair of sheath plates 32, 33, comprises upper arms 39 mounted on the pivot shafts 28 and lower arms 37 connected by pivots 38 to the arms 39, the movement of the arms 37 in one direction about the pivots 38 being limited by flattened ends 41 of the arms 37. Links 94 connect the arms 37 to fixed points 96 on the machine frame so that when the mechanism is turned upwards about the shafts 28 into an inoperative position by means of a handle secured to one of the pivots 38 the arms 37 are folded down as shown in Fig. 3. Springs 44 connected to the machine frame and to the arms 39 serve to hold the mechanism in the inoperative position and also, when the webrenewing operation is being performed, to hold the parts so that the sheath plates 32, 33 bear firmly against the running web. The arms 31 are normally connected to the arms 39 by a pivoted catch 47 and pin 49, the catch being released by an electromagnet 18, Fig. 1, the circuit of which includes a timing switch 17 closed once in each rotation of the new roll 13, and a switch 19 closed by a hand lever 61 which also serves, through arm 56 and cable 54, to pull the arms 31 forward, when the catch 47 is released, to cause the brush 26 to press the running web into contact with the roll 13, which has previously been prepared with adhesive, to effect the join. The cutting blade 27, Fig. 10, is normally retained with its cutting edge within the sheath plates 32, 33 by a spring pressed latch 72 engaging a notch 77 in the blade and secured to a shaft 73 mounted on a bracket fixed to the plate 32. An arm 78, Figs. 10 and 11, on the shaft 73 is connected by a link 79 to an arm 81 on a shaft 82 mounted in one of the arms 39 and provided with a second arm 83 operatively connected by a slotted link 84 to a trip arm 85 on a shaft 86 carried by the arms 31. When the arms 31 are pulled forward by the cable 54, the arm 85 is brought into the path of a device 92, Fig. 1, such as described in Specification 410,785, which rotates with the roll 13 and holds the leading end of the web thereof. The striking of the arm 85 by the device 92 acts through the connections described to move the latch 72 out of the notch 77 of the blade 27. The blade is then pulled longitudinally by a spring and, the blade being connected to the plates 32, 33 by pins 67 and inclined slots 68, the blade is projected from the sheath to sever the old web. When the mechanism is turned to the inoperative position of Fig. 3, a projection 97, Figs. 10 and 11, on one of the links 94 turns a bellcrank lever 99 comiected to one of the pins 67 of the knife to move the knife longitudinally until it is again engaged by the latch 72. Specification 453,046 also is referred to.
