(Cl. 242-58) This invention relates to web supply mechanism for a printing or other machine operating on a web drawn from a roll, and more particularly to improvements in web deflecting and cutting means for-use in machines having equipment for joining the web of a replacement roll to the web of an expiring roll without stopping the machine. This invention especially contemplates the provision of a folding web deflecting and cutting mechanism whereby the replacement roll may be disposed in place without interference thereby. 1
One object of this invention is to provide an improved web cutting and deflecting mechanism,
which is convenient to manipulate and control,
efficient in operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, while being sturdy in struction and positive in action.
Another object is to provide such a mechanism 20 wherein provision is made to fold the several portions thereof into a position free from possibly interfering with the moving of a replacement roll into operative position.
Still another object is to provide a web de- 25 fleeting and cutting mechanism of improved structure whereby the web joinmay be expeditiously-and efficiently assomplished and-the expiring web severed, substantially simultaneously, thereby not interfering with the continuous op- 30 eration of the printing machine.
Further objects comprise the provision of means to positively protract the web severing knife, of means to subsequently and positively re- ;5 tract the same when the several portions of the device are folded, the provision of a substantially automatic locking means therefor to retain it in retracted position, and the provision of manually operable means, disposed conveniently with respect to the machine for operating the web deflecting and cutting mechanism.
It is also an object of the invention to provide web supply mechanism of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple,
45 durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and eflicient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, Which will appear as the description proceeds, 50 the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that various changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a partial view, in elevation, of a web supply mechanism, with a folding web deflecting and cutting mechanism, embodying the features of this invention, applied thereto, which latter mechanism is herein shown in unfolded position and prior to its actuation to join the webs of a replacement and an expiring roll;

In the web supply mechanism selected to illustrate the features of this invention, a rotatable web roll supporting reel II has arms I2 extending therefrom upon which web rolls l3 and Il may be rotatably mounted in accordance with the general practice. Insuch mechanisms means is generally provided to rotate the replacement roll I3 before and during the joining of its web with the web of the expiring roll 15. The rotating means is indicated generally at l6 and comprises a driven belt in driving engagement with the replacement roll l3. In Figures 1 and 2, the web roll supporting reel l I is shown rotated into posioperation of the above mechanisms may be had by reference to copending applications Serial Nos.
5 700,652.and 709,497, now Patent No. 2,063,093. Electrical control means may also be provided to insure positive timing action of the various parts. In this instance, such control means is shown diagrammatically in Figure l in association with the parts of the mechanism, and generally operates as does a similar arrangement shown and described substantially in detail in the aforementioned application Serial No. 709,497. Generally, the electrical control includes a cam operated switch l1 which closes the circuit through a solenoid l3, mounted for operation as hereinafter described, in association with the web cutting mechanism of this invention, and a manually operated control switch I3.
The web deflecting and cutting mechanism of this invention is supported from a part of the machine frame 2| by brackets 22 which also support a web guiding roll 23, over which the web 24 runs as it enters the printing machine. The
25 web deflecting and cutting mechanism may be considered for the purpose of description, as being the combination of two devices cooperatively operable to Join the web 23 of the replacement roll l3 with the web 24 of the expiring roll l3. Both of these devices, one having a web engaging and deflecting means 23, herein in the form of a brush, mounted thereon, are pivotally mounted to each of the brackets 22 by common pivoting shafts 23.
The web deflecting brush 23 is mounted upon a supporting bar 23, which is in turn supported upon the shafts 23 by the arms 3|, one arm being disposed at each end of the bar '23. The web severing means, or knife blade 21, is slidably 40 mounted between a pair of members 32 and 33, which are secured together by screws 34 and then to arms 31 by bolts 33, one arm being disposed at each end of the members. Each arm 31 is pivotally mounted by a pin 33 upon an arm 33,
45 each of which is supported upon one of the shafts 23. The arms 31 are permitted pivotal movement in only one direction relative to thearm 33 due to engagement of an end 4| thereof with an end 42 of the arm 33.
g 50 The web severing means and its associated supporting parts are limited in their pivotal movement with the shafts 23 by stop pins 43 secured to the arms 33 and which are disposed to engage the bracket 22 and thereby limit the movement of the 53 arms 33 toward the roll supporting reel II. The movement of the arms 33, however, is suflicient to permit the members 32 and 33 to engage the web 24 and press firmly against same under constant urge of the springs 44, one of which is se- 60 cured to each arm 33 on a stud 43, and to the adjacent bracket 22 at 43.
The arms 3| with their supported web deflecting brush 23 and the associated members are also under urge of the springs 44 due to a releasable 65 connection between the adjacent arms 3| and 33. This connection comprises a releasable spring retained catch member 41 pivotally mounted at 43 to arm 33 and being adapted to engage a pin 49 provided on arm 3|. The web deflecting brush and its associated supporting parts are movable toward the web 24,
in this instance, by means of a cable or chain 34,
one end of which is secured to a post 33 on one of the arms 3|, and the other end of which is secured to a lever arm 33 pivotally mounted to a support 31 on an upright 33 of the machine frame 2|. The cable '34 is reeved over a pulley 33 rotat- The lever arm 33 is manually rockable to urge the brush 23 into contacting engagement with the web 24 and press or deflect it asainst the web 23 of the roll |3 by means of a hand lever 3|, which is mounted to the support 31 for pivotal movement with the lever arm 33.
To insure that the above operation of the brush 23, upon the webs 24 and 23, takes place when the adhesive covered area of the web 23 is directly opposite the portion of the web 24 engaged by the brush 23, without attention by the machine attendant, the electrical controls shown diagrammatically in connection with Figure l are provided. The arrangement is such that when pressure is applied to the handle 32 to move the lever 3| and thereby press the brush 23 against the web 24, the switch I3 is manipulated to close an electrical circuit through the solenoid l3 to release the catch 41. This action will not take place, however, until the switch l1 controlled by a cam 34 rotating with the roll I3, is operated to close the same circuit. The cam 34 is arranged to time the operation of the switch II V to insure proper position of the adhesive portion of the web 23 in respect to the brush 23 so that the brush will press webs 24 and 23 together as hereinafter explained. This movement of the brush 23 may be limited by stops 33 secured to the arms 33 and disposed to engage the arms 3|.
Substantially simultaneously with the above web joining operation, the web 24 is severed by the knife 21 as it is protracted between the members 32 and 33 in a shearing movement transversely across the web 24, with which the members 32 and 33 are in engagement. Herein the shearing movement of the knife 21 is obtained by mounting it for sliding movement, under influence of a spring 33, between the members 32 and .33 and under control of a plurality of angularly disposed guiding surfaces 33, formed in the members 32 and 33, cooperating with the studs 31 secured in and extending from both sides of the knife 21 into engagement with the surfaces 33. The surfaces 33 in thisinstance deflne a slot 33 formed in each of the members 32 and 33. The spring 33 is secured to the knife 21 at 33 and to the member 33 by a bolt 1| and is under tension to continuously urge the knife 21 into protracted position. The knife 21 is normally retained against protracted position by means of a catch finger 12, mounted at the end of a rock shaft 13, which is rotatably mounted in a bracket 14 secured to the member 32 by a bolt 13. The finger 12 under constant urge of a coiled spring 13 tends to lie within a notch 11, in the knife 21, when the latter is in retracted position wholly between the members 32 and 33, and with its cutting edge covered thereby. A lever 13 rotates the flnger- A lever 83, rotatable with the lever BI, is arranged to be rocked by a link 84 secured to a trip arm 85. The trip arm 85 is secured upon ashaft 88, which is rotatably mounted in brackets 81 on the brush supporting bar 29. A spring 88 is in engagement with and about the shaft 88 and is tensioned to normally maintain the arm 85 in inoperative position in respect to moving the link 84 to rock the lever 83. Considerable movement, in lever rocking direction, is permitted the link 84 through the instrumentality of a lost motion arrangement comprising a'slot 89 formed in the end of the link 84 at its connection with the lever 83, in which the connecting pin 9| is disposed and may slide. A member 92 which forms no part of the present invention and is fully described in a co-pending application Serial No. 709,497, is rotated with the web roll prior to and during the web joining operation and serves to hold the web end of the replacement roll in contact with the body of the roll by suitable clamping mechanism. This member is also arranged to engage the trip arm 85 when the brush 28 completes its web joining operation. This action swings the arm 85 to rotate lever 83, the brush 28 completes its web joining operation, swings the arm to rotate the lever 83 through the link 84 and thereby, through lever 9|, link 19 and lever 18, removes finger 12 from notch 11, and permits the quick protraction of the knife 21, to sever web 24, by the spring 85.
A handle 93 is herein provided as an extension of the pivot pin 38 for the purpose of folding the several parts of the above described mechanism into the position shown in Figure 3. As the arms 39 are swung about the shaft 28 by use of the handle 93, a relative movement is caused between a link 94, pivoted at one end 95 to the arm 31 and at the other to the bracket 22 at 98. This relative movement causes a finger 91, disposed on. the end of the link 94 and extending beyond the pivot 95, to engage an arm 98 of a bell crank 99, pivoted to the bracket 14 by a screw IIII. The other arm I02 of bell crank 99, being pivotally secured to the knife 21 by an extension of the stud 81, withdraws the knife 21 into retracted position as shown in Figure 10, and the catch finger 12 drops into the notch 11, to retain the knife retracted, until it is again protracted as above described.
A continued folding movement of the arms 39 causes the engagement of the stops 83, projecting from the arms 39, with the adjacent arm 3| to swing the brush 28 with its associated parts into the folded position as shown. This movement of the brush 28, with its associated parts, causes the engagement of the catch 41 with the pin 49, which engagement continues until they are again disengaged as above described. The mechanism, when completely folded, is conveniently disposed out of possible interference with the movement of additional replacement rolls into position for, and loading them into the reel II. The swinging of arms 39 about the axes of shafts 28 brings the connecting point 45, for the spring 44 above the shafts 28 (as shown in Figure 3), and the spring 44 is caused to act as a retaining means to hold the parts in folded position.
The mechanism of this invention, when not in actual use and operation, is disposed in folded position as shown in Figure 3. When it is required to change a roll, the reel II is rotated in the usual manner-to dispose the rolls I3 and I5 into roll changing position as shown in Figure 1 without being interfered with by the aforesaid mechanism. The end of the web 25 on the roll I3 is suitably trimmed and anarea thereof covered with adhesive. The folded web deflecting and cutting mechanism is then moved into the position as shown in Figure 1, by unfolding the same by use of the conveniently disposed handle 93. The replacement roll I3 is caused to attain substantially the speed of the expiring roll I5 by operation of the belt drive I6 and the machine attendant assumes a position to one side of the machine wherefrom a full view of the operating mechanism is possible and the control means therefor, including the lever 8|, are conveniently disposed.
Assuming that the replacement roll has been prepared in the usual manner by spreading adhesive on its outer surface adjacent to the end of the web and that the end of the web is held against the roll by any suitable means, which may be the clamps carried by the members 92 referred to above, the roll is rotated by the belt I8 and brings its peripheral speed substantially into synchronism with the speed of the running web. When it is desired to make the join, the operator pulls downward on lever 8|, and in doing so, presses the handle 62 which operates the switch I9, partially completing an electric circuit through the solenoid I8, which circuit is completed by the switch I1 when its circuit is closed by the cam 84 that rotates with the member 92. It will be observed that the timing of the switch I1 with respect to the angular position of the roll is such that it prevents the releasing of the catch holding the pasting brush during the interval that the pasted area is passing the brush, but after it has passed, the operator can then pull the lever and swing the brush into position to make the web join.
The operation may be more specifically defined as follows:
By completion of the electric circuit, the solenoid I8 is energized, releasing the catch 41 which permits the operator to swing the brush 28 to press the running web against the replacement roll, and when the member 92 engages the trip arm 85, the knife 21 is released and the spring 85 causes it to sever the web of the expiring roll, and the web feed to the machine is then continued from the replacement roll.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a web supply mechanism, cooperating web deflecting and web severing means, said means being swingable about a common pivot point in one direction to a folded position and a portion of one of said means being swingable in the other direction into folded position against the other means.
2. In a web supply mechanism, cooperating web deflecting and web severing means, said means being swingable about a common pivot point in one direction to a folded position and a portion of one of said means being swingable in the other direction into folded position against the other means, and means to releasably retain said means in folded position.
3. In a web supply mechanism, cooperating web deflecting and web severing means, said means being swingable about a common pivot point, means to urge said cooperating means to swing about the common pivot point therefor 5 in one direction, to permit the swinging thereof in the other direction into folded position, and to releasably retain said cooperating means in folded position.
4. In a web supply mechanism, cooperating web deflecting and web severing means, said means being swingable about a common pivot point, means to urge said cooperating eans to swing about the common pivot point th i'efor in one direction, to permit the swinging th reof in the other direction into folded position, and to releasably retain said cooperating means in folded position, a portion of one of said means being swingably mounted for folding movement opposite to the folding movement of the cooperating means and into folded position against the other means. g
5. In web supply mechanism, the combination of web deflecting means, web severing means having a pivoted portion, a common pivotal sup- 5 port for said combined means about which each may independently swing, means to limit the swinging movement of one. of said means in one direction, means to releasably limit the swinging movement of the other means in the same direction, means to urge both of said means in the aforesaid limited direction, both of said means being swingable upon said pivotal support, in a direction opposite to the limited movement direction, into a folded position with the pivoted portion of said severing means folded thereon, said urging means being operable to maintain said means and said portion in folded position.
6. In web supply mechanism, the combination 0 of web deflecting means, web severing means, a common pivotal support for said combined means about which the same may swing, means to limit the swinging movement of one of said means in one direction, means to releasably limit the swinging movement of the other means in the same direction, both of said means being swingable upon said pivotal support, in a direction opposite to the limited movement direction, into a folded position and a portion of one of said means being swingable relatively to the other into fold-' ed position thereagainst.
7. Cooperating web deflecting and severing means for a machine operating upon a web, one of said means having a portion thereof swingable relatively thereto in one direction, both of said means being swingable in the other direction into folded position with said swingable portion folded thereagainst.
8. In a web supply mechanism, a swingable 50 web deflecting means, a swingable web severing means including a holding member, a protractable web cutting member disposed in said holding member, means to protract an edge of said cutting member from a side of said holding member, and means to retract said edge of said cutting member into said holding member, operable upon the swinging of said web deflecting and severing means into a folded position.
9. In a web supply mechanism, a swingable 7 web deflecting means, a swingable web severing means, a common pivotal support for each of said means, releasable means disposed in connecting position to connect said web deflecting and severing means, means to disconnect said 75 last named means, a protractable web cutting member carried by said severing means within a portion thereof, means to protract an edge of said cutting member from said portion, and means to retract said edge of said cutting member into said portion, said cutting member retracting means being operable, andsaid connecting means being returned to the aforesaid connecting position, upon the swinging movement of said web deflecting and. severing means about said pivotal support into a folded position.
10. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting means, a web severing means, said means being independently swingable upon a common supporting means, means to releasably connect said web deflecting and severing means, means to limit the movement of said severing means in one direction, means to limit the movement of said deflecting means relatively to said severing means in the same direction, means to urge said deflecting means and said severing means, when con-.
nected, for swinging movement together in one direction, and means to continue such movement of said deflecting means when the same is disconnected from said severing means.
11. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting means, a web severing means, said means being independently swingable upon a common supporting means, means to releasably connect said web deflecting and severing means, means to limit the movement of said severing means in one direction, means to urge said deflecting means and said severing means, when connected, for swinging movement together in one direction, and means to continue such movement of said'defleeting means when the same is disconnected from said severing means, said deflecting and severing means being swingable into a folded position, means to insure the swinging of both of said means into folded position substantially simultaneously, said urging means being operable when said means are in folded position to releasably retain them therein;
12. In a web Joining mechanism for joining the running web of a web roll to the web of a replacement roll and substantially simultaneously severing the running web, means to deflect the running web toward the replacement roll, means to sever the running web during such deflection thereof, said severing means including a swingable arm and aprotractable cutting member mounted on said arm, means to insure a shearing movement of said cutting member transversely across the web being severed, while said cutting member is being protracted, and said am is in one position, and means actuated by the swinging of said arm into another position to retract said cutting member.
13. In a web joining mechanism for Joining the running web of a web roll to the web of a replacement roll and substantially simultaneously severing the running web, means to deflect the running web toward the replacement roll, means to sever the running web during such deflection thereof, said severing means comprising a protractable cutting member, and means to insure a shearing movement of said cutting member transversely across the web being severed, while said cutting member is being protracted, meansto support said severing means for swinging movement away from the running web, and means to retract said cutting member when said severing means is so swung.
14. In a web joining mechanism for joining the running web of a web roll to the web of a replacement roll and substantially simultaneously severing the running web, means to deflect the running web toward the replacement roll, and means to sever the running web during such deflection thereof, said severing means comprising a protractable member, releasable means to quickly protract said cutting member against the web to be severed, means to release said protracting means, including a catch, a slidable rod to actuate said catch, and a lost motion connection between said rod and said catch to delay such action a predetermined amount.
15. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting means, a web severing means, said means being independently swingable upon a common supporting means, means to releasably connect said web deflecting and severing means, means to limit the movement of said severing means in one direction, means to urge said deflecting means and said severing means, when connected, for swinging movement together in one direction, and means to continue such movement of said deflecting means when the same is disconnected from said severing means, said deflecting and severing means being swingable into a folded position, and common means to insure simultaneous swinging movement of said web deflecting and severing means into folded position and to limit the movement of said deflecting means in the other direction.
16. In a web joining mechanism for joining the running web of a web roll to the web of a replacement roll and substantially simultaneously severing the running web, means to deflect the running web toward the replacement roll, means to sever the running web during such deflection thereof, said Web deflecting and severing means being swingable in unison in one direction into a folded position and said web severing means being swingable in the other direction to be folded over said folded means.
17. In a web supply mechanism, a web severing device including a member substantially coextensive with the width of a web and mounted to swing in one direction to be disposed with an edge thereof in engagement with a web, a web cutting knife mounted on said member, means to protract said knife beyond the edge of said member to sever the web, means to retract said knife, and means actuated by the swinging of said member in the other direction to actuate said knife retracting means.
18. In a web supply mechanism, a web severing device including a member mounted for swingng movement in respect to a web and being substantially coextensive with the width of the web to engage the web when it is swung toward the web, a web cutting blade mounted on said member for sliding movement longitudinally thereof, means to guide an edge of said blade outwardly beyond an edge of said member during its sliding movement in one direction, means to urge said blade to slide in the aforesaid direction, a releasable catch to restrain said blade from so sliding, means to release said catch, and means to retract said blade actuated by the swinging of said member away from the web.
19. In a web supply mechanism, a stationary part, an arm pivotally connected to said part to be folded upwardly thereagainst, another arm pivoted to said first arm to be folded downwardly thereagainst when said first arm is in folded position, a web severing device, including a holder having a protractable web cutting mem ber therein supported by said second arm, and means actuated by the folding movement of one of said arms to retract said cutting member.
20. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting means, a web severing means, one of said means being swingable independently of the other upon a common supporting means, means to releasably connect said web deflecting and severing means, means to limit the movement of said severing means in one direction, means to limit the movement of said deflecting means relatively to said severing means in the same direction, means to urge said deflecting and severing means when connected together in the said direction, means to continue such movement of said deflecting means when the same is disconnected from said severing means, said urging means being operable when the connected deflecting and severing means are swung in the other direction into inoperative position, to retain them in such position.
21. In a web joining mechanism for joining the running web of a roll to the web of a replacement roll and then severing the running web, means to deflect the running web toward the replacement roll, means to sever the running web during such deflection thereof, said severing means comprising a cutting member protractable from a casing, means to protract said cutting member to sever the running web, means to support the severing means for swinging movement away from the running web, and means to retract said cutting member when said severing means is so swung.
22. In a web supply mechanism, an arm mounted for swinging movement toward and away from a positioned replacement web roll to cause a web deflecting member carried thereby to deflect a web, running adjacent to the roll, against the same, a web severing device including a blade holder swingable with said arm, in its movement toward said roll, into position 'adjacent the running web, a web cutting member slidably mounted in said holder and adapted to be protracted therefrom to sever the running web,
means to protract the cutting member beyond the holder to engage the web, means to retract the cutting member to its inoperative position within the holder, and means actuated by the swinging of said arm away from said roll to actuate said retracting means.
