Electrical control means is also provided to insure positive timing action of the various parts and herein such control means is shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. controls include a switch l8 operated from a cam l9. mounted to rotate with each of the web rolls, a solenoid 2| in circuit with the switch l8, and a manually operated switch 22. Closing of the switch 22 permits the closing of the circuit through the solenoid 2| by the cam operated switch I8 in timed relation with the rotation of the roll by the belt drive l5. v
The web joining mechanism of this invention is supported from a machine frame part 23 by brackets 24. ,The brackets 24 also support a web guiding roller 25, over which the web l-l runs as it enters the machine. For the purposes of Briefly, the electrical the description of this invention, the web joining mechanism may be considered as being the combination of two devices adapted to cooperatively operate to join the web' of the replacement roll replacement roll it.
I3 with the running web I? from the expiring roll l5. One of these devices hereinafter referred to as the web deflector is constituted by a brush or other web engaging member 26, which is mounted upon a bar 2? secured to and extending between arms 23 and 29. The other device hereinafter referred to as the web cutting means is constituted by a knife 3| slidably mounted in a frame 32 secured to and extending between arms 33 and 36.
The adjacent pairs of arms 28, 33 and 29, 34'
are mounted upon shafts 35 and 36 respectively which are respectively journaled one in each of the brackets 26. The arms 33 and 34 are keyed or otherwise secured to the respective shaft ends 35 and 36, while the arms 28 and 29 are freely rotatable respectively thereon. An offset shaft portion 3'1 is connected at each end to one of the shaft ends 35 and 33 by crank arms 38 and 39 respectively, whereby the shaft ends 35 and 36 will rotate in unison in the supporting brackets 24. From the above, it will be understood that the term offset shaft, as used herein is intended to define a shaft structure generally of crank formation having a portion eccentric to other portions of the shaft. The offset shaft portion 3! is preferably hollow to permit the disposition therein of a shaft it which extends therethrough and is journaled in the arms 38 and 39. Pinions 43 are secured to the ends of the shaft ll. Each pinion 33 is in mesh with a rack 34 secured to the inner side face of each of the deflector supporting arms 28 and 25!. A spring 45 is coiled about the shaft 3! and has one end secured thereto and the other end secured to the crank arm 38. The spring 35 is so arranged and tensioned as to con stantly'urge the shaft ll to rotate in the proper direction to movethe arms 28 and 29 relatively to the offset shaft portion 3'? and away from the The connection so provided between the web deflector arms 28 and 29' also prevents thedeflector from twisting by insuring swinging movement of the arms in unison when they are moved in web deflecting direction to join the webs. tion 3'! is arranged to be disposed closely adjacent to the web l'lwhen it is disposed in web pre-joining position so as to be engaged by the web l'l should it vibrate or flutter as it runs from the frame 32 to the roller 25 and thereby steady the web and reduce such vibration or fluttering movement.
The web deflector device and the web cutting device are releasably joined together for swinging movement into the web pre-joining position shown from the inoperative position, as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1, by a catch 46 secured to a shaft 41 carried by the knife supporting arm 33, and adapted to engage about a pin 43 secured to the deflector supporting arm 28 (see Figure 2) An arm 49 secured on the shaft 4'! is connected to the plunger 5! of the solenoid 2| by a link52 whereby energization of the solenoid 2| will rock the shaft with the catch 46 and will release it from the pin 48 permitting relative movement between the deflector supporting arms 28, 29 and the knife supporting arms 33, 34. A coiled spring 53 is arranged to constantly urge the catch 46' into its pin engaging position. Due to the engagement of pins 54 on the arms 33 and 34 with stop pins 55 secured to the adjacent bracket 24, the knife supporting arms are limited in their swinging movement with the offset shaft portion 31 toward the replacement roll l3. The arms 33 and 34 are held in their web pre-join position Preferably, the offset shaft por and against the stop pins 55 by a spring 56 attached to a pin 51 on the arm 33 and to a machine part at 58.
A handle 59 is provided by which the arms 33 and 34 may be manually swung into operative or web pre-join position or into the inoperative position indicated by dotted lines in Figure l. A cable or the like BI is provided, which has one end secured to a pin 62, mounted on the deflector arm 28, and has its other end secured to an arm 63.
The arm 63 is loosely supported on a shaft fi l, 'journaled in a bracket 66, secured upon the machine frame 61. A spring 65 has one of its ends secured to a collar 64' which is adjustably secured to the shaft 64; It is coiled about the shaft and has its other end secured to the arm 63. A handle 60, also secured to the shaft 63, is adapted to'rotate the shaft 64 to tension the spring 65 so that when the catch 46 is released the deflector 26 will be moved by the spring 65 through the cable 6|, toward the replacement roll E3 to engage the web IT and deflect it against the roll. to join it to a previously adhesive coated end of the web thereon.
The handle 60 has a finger 97 extending therefrom toward the bracket 66 and which is adapted by an adjusting screw 98 positioned to engage a pin 99 on the bracket 66 to limit the downward movementof the handle 60. An arm l0! secured to the end of the shaft 64 adjacent the arm 63 is provided with an adjusting screw I02 adapted to engage the arm 63, when it is rotated on the shaft 64 bythe spring 65 to actuate the deflector 26, and limit the movement of the arm 63. By adjusting the screw I02 the effective tension of the spring 65 upon the deflector 26 may be delicately adjusted and controlled to avoid too great a pressure being imposed upon the web H as it is pressed against the roll I3. A earn 403 also secured upon the shaft 64 is adapted to engage the operating arm I04 of the switch 22 to close the circuit controlled thereby when the handle 50 is moved downwardly into the position shown in Figure 1, from the normal inoperative position indicated by dotted lines.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the offset shaft portion 31 is arranged to protrude slightly beyond the face of the deflector brush 26 and the edge of the knife holding frame 32, and be disposed nearer to the replacement roll l3 than either of them. This disposition of the shaft portion 31 insures that, should the reel I! be inadvertently rotated beyond its determined web joining position, the replacement roll l3 will'engage the shaft portion 31 and rock it, whereby the web deflecting and cutting mechanism will be simultaneously rocked and no damage will be possible, due to the engagement of the roll therewith.
The knife 3| is mounted in the frame 32 and guided inits sliding movements therein by a plu rality of cooperating studs 68 and inclined grooves 69, one of which is shown in Figure 6. The knife is retained in its retracted position by a pin ll protruding from an arm 12 securedto a shaft 13, one end of which is journaled in and extends outwardly from a side of the knife supporting arm 33, while the other end is journaled in a bracket HI, secured to the frame 32. The pin H is arranged to enter a hole 14 in the knife 3! and hold it against the action of a spring 15 (Figure 7) arranged to constantly urge the knife to slide in one direction in the frame 32. The spring 15 is secured at its ends to the knife 3| at 16, and to the frame 32 at H. The pin ll isremoved from the hole 14 by the rotation of the shaft 13 by an web end thereof.
arm 18 secured on the shaft 13. A spring 19 is coiled about the shaft and has its ends connected to the arm 33 and to the arm 18. The spring-19 is tensioned and arranged to constantly urge the pin into the hole 14.
The arm 18 has a link 8| pivoted thereto and which extends upwardly therefrom alongside of the knife supporting arm 33 being guidingly sup ported by a strap 82 secured to the side of the arm 33. The link BI is provided with a hook end 83 adapted to engage over a pin 84 secured in the end of an arm 85 extending from the hub of the catch 46, when a stop pin 86, extending from the adjacent side of the deflector supporting arm 28', is moved'away from link by movement of the arm 28 toward the replacement roll I3. A spring 81 is. arranged to constantly urge the link 8| in pin engaging position, being secured at 88 to the link 8|, and at 89 to the strap 82. Energization of the solenoid 2| at the next revolution of theroll l3 after it has been energized to release the catch 33, will cause the link 8|, the hook end of which is now engaging the pin 84, to swing the arm 13 and pull the pin 1| from the hole M, whereupon the knife 3| will be protracted from the frame 32-by the spring 15 and against the web running from the expiring roll l5, to sever it, as shown by dotted lines in Figures 2, 4 and 6. The means to retract the knife 3| into the frame 32, is constituted by an arm 9|, secured to a shaft 92 extending upwardly along the replacement roll side of the knife supporting arm 33. The arm 9| has a stud93 extending from its free end downwardly into a slot 99 (Fig. 6), in the knife 3|. Rotation of the shaft 92 in one direc-. tion will rock the arm 9| to slide the knife 3| into retracted position whereupon the pin 1| will snap into the hole M by action of the spring 19 thereon. The shaft 92 is rotated by an arm 94 (Fig. 5), which is secured to the shaft 92 and extends into and engages with, the cam shaped face of a recess 95 formed in the hub portion 96 of the adjacent bracket 24. The arm 95, being movable with the knife supporting arm 33, sides out of the recess 95 (Figure 5A), when the arm 33 is manually returned to its inoperative position, and in doing so the shaft 92, to which the arm 94 is secured, is rotated, moving the knife 3| to its retracted position within the frame 32. I
The above described web joining mechanism is adapted to be operated to insure an efficient web join without stopping the machine. This is accomplished by rotating the reel II to dispose a replacement roll !3 in a determined web prejoining position and in engagement with the belt drive Hi to be rotated thereby. The web deflecting and cutting mechanism is then lowered into its web pre-J'oin position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The handle 69 is then actuated to close the switch 22 and to impose a pull upon the cable 6| and the web deflecting brush 26 through the spring 65. The cam i9, at the next revolution of the roll l3, actuates the switch |8 whereupon the solenoid 2| is energized to release-the catch 46. The web deflecting brush 29 immediately engages the web I? andpresses it against the roll l3 whereon it adheres to the adhesive covered The handle 69 is held down until after the next actuation of the cam l9 upon the switch l8, whereupon the solenoid 2| is again energized to actuate the link 8| and through it .remove the pin H from the hole 14 permitting pinion.
the replacement roll is fed into the machine.
The mechanism is then swung back intoits inoperative positionduring which movement the knife 3| is retracted, as above described, and set in position to be protracted when the mechanism is again'actuated' to effect a web join.
