This invention relates to web supply mechanism for a printing or other machine operating upon a web drawn from a roll, and more particularly to improvements in web deflecting and severing means for use in machines having equip ment for joining the web of a replacement roll to the Web of an expiring web roll without stopping the machine. This invention especially contemplates the provision of means for actuating the web severing knife, of a high speed web joining mechanism having a latching mechanism with a solenoid release for the web deflecting mechanism, which is operably connected to the knife release to actuate the same and thereby permit the knife to sever the web.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved web deflecting and severing mechanism.
Another object is to provide in such a mechanism, provision to latch the brush carrying arm of the deflecting mechanism to the knife carrying arm, and, after releasing the same, to cause further operation of the latch to release. the knife to sever the web.
Still another object is to provide in a web defiecting and severing mechanism, a solenoid actuated latch for holding the brush carrying arm, and automatically operable mechanism actuated by the said solenoid for releasing the web severing knife to permit its operation.
A further object is to provide an improved form of device for actuating and controlling a web defleeting and severing mechanism.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a web supply mechanism of generally improved construction, .whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and efficient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that various changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The web supply mechanism selected to illustrate the features of this invention and shown in Figure 1, includes a rotatable web roll supporting reel I I having arms i2 extending therefrom upon which web'rolls l3, l4 and I 5 may be rotatably mounted in accordancewith the general practice. In this instance web roll I3 is the expiring roll from which the web l6 thereof, is directed over guide rollers I1 into a machine adapted to operate thereon, such as a printing machine. v Roll M is the replacement roll, which is shown after the reel H has been rotated to position it in proper relation to the web [6 to have itsweb joined thereto. Roll i5 is another web roll in position to be moved into the position now occu- 4O pied by roll l4, when occasion demands the same.
In the web supply mechanism illustrated, provision is made for rotating the replacement roll it before and during the joining of its web with the web I6 of the expiring roll IS. The roll ro- 5 tating meansis. herein indicated as comprising a driven belt IS in driving engagement with the roll l4.
Electrical control means is also provided to insure proper timing action of the various parts and are herein illustrated diagrammatically in Figure 1. This control means includes a cam l9 mounted to rotate with the replacement roll l4 and adapted to actuate a control switch.2l. to energize a solenoid 22, which is arranged and adapted to operate as hereinafter described, in association with the web deflecting and severing mechanism of this invention. A manually operated control switch 23 is also provided, in this instance, in association with a manually actuated, mechanism operating lever 24, which is swingably mounted for movement from the dotted position shown in Figure 1 into the full line position, where it is stopped by a lug 30 herein shown formed on a supporting bracket 26.
The web deflecting and severing mechanism herein shown is supported from a machine frame 25 by and between brackets 26, which extend downwardly from the frame 25, one at each end of the reel H and which also support the guide rollers M. This mechanism, for the purpose of this description, may be considered as being a combination of two devices operable in cooperation to join the web IS with the web of the replacement roll 14. Both of these devices, one of which carries a web engaging and deflecting member, herein in the form of a brush 21, and the other of which carries a web severing knife 28, are pivotally mounted to each bracket upon a common pivoting shaft 29, so they may be manually swung backward and upward out of the way, when they are not in use and also downwardly and forwardly into operative position as shown in Figure 1, by means of a handle 46.
The web deflecting member or brush 2'! is mounted upon a supporting bar 3!, which extends between arms 32 mounted upon the shaft 29. The web severing means or knife blade 28 is slidably mounted between a pair of bars 33 and 34, which are secured together by screws 35 and then extend between and are secured to arms 36 by bolts 31. The arms 36 are mounted upon the shaft 29 and are limited in the forward pivotal movement therewith by stop pins 38 mounted, one on each arm, and disposed to engage a lug 39 depending from each of the brackets 26. Sufiicient movement of arms 36 is permitted however to allow members 21, and an edge of each bar 33 and 34, to engage and firmly press against the web I6 under constant pressure of springs 45, one of which is secured to each arm 36 on a stud 42, and to the adjacent bracket 26 at 43.
The arms 32, with their supported web deflecting brush 21, are normally locked to the web severing mechanism by a releasable connection between the adjacent arms 32 and 36. This connection comprises a releasable spring retained catch member 44 secured to one end of a shaft 45 which is pivotally mounted at its other end to the arm 36. The catch member 44 is adapted to engage a pin 46 on the arm 32 by a hook 41, formed on the catch member. One end of a lever 48, which extends oppositely to the portion 4'! of member 44, is secured to the shaft 45, adjacent the end thereof journaled in the arm 36, and is connected at its other end to the movable core 43 of the solenoid 22 by a link 5|. The energizing of the solenoid 22 will pull the core 49 to rock the catch 44 and release the pin 46 from the hook 47 permitting pivotal movement of the arms 32 relatively to the arms 36, toward the replacement roll l4, by a cable 52, which is secured to the arm 32 on a stud 53, and to the lever 24 by a spring 56, which is secured to an end of an arm 54 movable with the lever 24 upon a shaft 55. The cable 52 is reeved over a suitably disposed pulley 56 rotatably mounted upon the machine frame 25. It will be understood that when pressure is applied to the manually actuated lever 24, the spring 56 causes the web deflecting brush 21, when the catch 44 is released to press the web I6 against a previously prepared adhesive covered area on the web of the replacement roll M, to join the webs together.
To insure that the above operation of the brush 21, upon the web l6, takes place when the adhesive covered area of the web of the replacement roll 54 is directly opposite the portion of the web I6 engaged by the brush 21, the electrical controls shown in Figure 1 are provided. The arrangement is such that when pressure is applied to the handle 24 tending through the spring 56 to press the brush 21 against the web Hi, the control switch 23 may be closed by pressure upon a spring controlled thumb button 60, through an operating rod 10, which engages the actuating member of the switch 23, to permit energization of the solenoid 22 by the operation of the switch 2| when it, in turn, is closed by action of the cam [9. The cam I9 is arranged to time the operation of the switch 2| to insure proper position of the adhesive area on the web of the replacement roll in respect to the brush 2'! so that this brush will press the webs together. This movement of the brush 2'! may be limited by stops 51 secured to the arms 36 and disposed to be engaged by lugs 58 on the arms 32.
Directly after the above web joining operation takes place the web l6 running from the then expired roll, is severed by the knife 28, as it is protracted between the bars 83 and 34 in a shearing movement transversely across the web, with which the bars 33 and 34 are in engagement. As herein shown, the shearing movement of the knife 28 is obtained by mounting it for sliding movement, under influence of a spring 59, between the bars 33 and 34 and under the control of a plurality of angularly disposed guiding surfaces 6!, formed in the bars 33 and 34, cooperating with studs 62, secured in and extending from both sides of the knife 28. The spring 53 is secured to the knife 28 at 63 and to the member 34 by a bolt 64, and is tensioned to constantly urge the knife 28 into protracted position.
The knife 28 is normally retained against protraction by the spring 59, by means of a catch finger 65, mounted upon the end of a rock shaft 66, which is rotatably mounted in a bracket 61 secured to the bar 33 by a bolt 68. The finger 65 is under continuous urge of a coiled spring 69 to cause it to lie within a notch H (Figure formed in the knife 28, when the latter is in retracted position wholly between the bars 33 and 34 with its cutting edge covered thereby. A lever 12 mounted upon the shaft 66 is adapted to rock the finger 65 out of the notch H to release the knife 28. The knife 28 may be Withdrawn from its protracted position by any suit able means such as the herein shown lever 13 pivoted to the bracket 61 by a screw 14 and being secured at one end to one of the studs 62. A handle 75 is provided on the other end of lever I3 for use in the manipulation thereof for the above purpose.
Provision is made for rocking the lever 12 by actuation of the catch member 44 at the next revolution of the replacement roll 14 after the webs are joined as above described. Herein, the means for rocking the lever 12 comprises an arm portion 76 on the member 44 extending oppositely to the hook portion 41 having a pin 1'! sol mounted thereon in position to be engaged .by a link 18 in a notch 19 formed therein. The link 18 is continuously urged toward the member 44 and pin I! by a spring 8| secured at one end to a stud 82 on the arm 32 and at the other end to the link B8. A stoppin 83 on the arm 32 is positioned, to prevent cooperating engagement of the pin 7'! in the notch l9, when the arm 32 is in connected relation with the arm 36 as shown in Figure 2, and to permit the engagement of the pin Tl in the notch 19, when the arm 32 is moved to the position shown in Figure 4.
After being actuated by the solenoid 22 to release the arm 32 from the arm 36, the catch member 44 is returned to its normal position, by means of a coiled spring 84 acting upon the shaft 45 by having one of its ends secured to a collar 85 secured to the shaft, and its other end secured to the arm 36. This position of member 44 is shown in dotted lines in Figure 4. The spring 8! now pulls the link 78 toward the pin 1'! whereby it is engaged in the notch 19 and by energization of the solenoid at the next revolution of the roll 14 due to action of the cam ii) on the switch 2!, the core 59 pulls upon the link 5| to rock the member 44 into the position shown in Figure 5. This movement actuates the link '58 to rock the lever i2 and removes the finger 65 from the notch ll. As above explained, this action permits the knife 28 to be protracted by the spring 59 to sever the web !6.
The electrical circuit may be arranged as shown wherein a conductor 9| leads from a line wire Ll to the switch 23 from which a conductor 92 leads to the solenoid 22. From the solenoid 22 a conductor 93 continues the circuit to a contact ring 94 rotatable with the reel II. From the ring 94 the circuit continues through a suitable automatically operable switch 95 herein shown as being of the mercury type, from which a conductor 96 leads to the switch 2| and thence to another contact ring 98 by way of conductor 91 from which a conductor 99 leads to the other line wire L2. A cam l9, a switch 2|, and a-switch 95 is provided on each arm of the reel H and in view of its construction, each of the switches 95 are in closed circuit condition only when the arm upon which it is mounted is in position to dispose a replacement web roll in web joining position.
Briefly the operation of the mechanism is as follows:
It will be assumed that the replacement roll M has been moved into the position shown in Figures l and 2 by rotation of the supporting reel H and that the replacement roll has been prepared by having adhesive applied to its web and is being rotated at the proper speed by the belt is. The attendant presses downwardly upon the lever 24 which through the spring causes a pull to be applied through the cable 52, upon the arm 32; However, actuation or movement of the arm is restrained by the catch 44. Cam l9 due to its rotation with the roll l4 actuates the switch 2| to complete the circuit to the solenoid 22, to energize the same when the adhesive covered area on the web of the replacement roll I4 is in proper position to have the web l6 pressed against the same by the brush 2? after the attendant has pressed the button 60 to close the switch 23. Energization, of the solenoid 22 actuates the catch member 44 through the movable core 49 and the link 5! to release the arm 32 from the arm 36 and above described permit its movement toward the .roll M to press the web [6 thereagainst. Continued rotation of theroll. l4 allows the switch 2| to open after the cam I 9 has passed and deenergize the solenoid 22, permitting the catch member 44 to be positionedpby the action of the spring 84 to engage the link 78 of the web severing mechanism and on the next rotation of the roll, the cam l9 again closes switch 2 and the solenoid 22 is again energized as previously explained to actuate the link 18 and rock the lever 12 to release the web severing knife 28. r
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a mechanism has been provided, whereby with a single solenoid and a simple electric circuit a web deflector and a web cutter maybe caused to operate in proper timed relation to effeet the joining of the web of a replacement web roll to the web of an expiring web roll and then sever the latter.
It will be understood that the invention may be'embodied-in. other specific forms without de parting. from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it. is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and it will be further'understood that each and every novel feature and combination present in or possessed by the mechanism herein disclosed forms a part of the invention included in this application.
What I claim is:
1. In a web supply mechanism adapted to join a running web to the web of a replacement roll, an actuation restrained web deflecting device, an actuation restrained Web severing device, and common means operable first to release and permit actuation of said web deflecting device to join the webs and again after the join is made to release said web severing device.
2. In a web supply mechanism adapted to join a runningwebto the web of p a replacement roll, an actuation restrained web deflecting device, an actuation restrained web severing device, common means operable first to release and permit actuationof said web deflecting device to join the webs and again after the join is made to release said web severing device, and means to actuate said common means. V 3. In a web supply mechanism, an actuation restrained web deflecting device, an actuation restrained web severing device, common means operable to successively release and permit actuation of said web deflecting device and said web severing device, and a single solenoid adapted to actuate said common means for both operations.
4. In a web supply mechanism, an actuation restrained web deflecting device, an actuation restrained web severing device, a swingable member operable to successively release and permit actuation of said web deflecting device and said web severing device, single means to actuate said member, and control means for said single means to alternate the operation of said devices.
5. In a web supply mechanism, an actuation restrained web deflecting device, an actuation restrained web severing device, and common means operable in timed relation with the rotation of a replacement roll to first release and permit actuation of said web deflecting device and after an interval dependent on the speed of the roll, to release said web severing device.
6. In a web supply mechanism for a printing machine, a web deflecting device, a web severing device, means to actuate said web deflecting device, common means operable in timed rela tion with the rotation of a replacement roll 'to first permit actuation of said web deflecting dedeflector to engage the running web, releasable mechanism to actuate said web severing device, and timing means rotating with the replacement roll to release said first mechanism during one revolution of the roll and to release said second ,15 mechanism during the next revolution of the roll.
8. In a web supply mechanism, means to rotatably support a replacement roll adjacent to a running web, a web deflector, a web severing de- .-zo vice, releasable mechanism to actuate said web deflector to engage the running web, releasable mechanism to actuate said web severing device, common means operable to release both of said mechanisms, and control means for said common means to cause operation of the same to release said first mechanism during one revolution of the replacement roll and to release said second mechanism during the next revolution of the roll.
9. In a web supply mechanism, a swingable arm having a web deflecting member thereon, another swingable arm having a web severing device thereon, restrained means to actuate said severing device, a common supporting shaft for said arms, means to releasably connect said arms, and common means to release said arm connecting means and to release said severing device actuating means in sequence.
10. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting member, a web severing device said member and said device being movable in the same direction, releasable means connecting said member to said device, restrained means to actuate said severing device, means to operate said releasable means to release said member from said device and to release said restrained severing device actuating means, and means to prevent operation of said releasing means to release said severing device actuating means, before it has operated to release said member from said device.
ll. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting device. a web severing device, said devices being movable in the same direction, a rockable member pivoted to one of said devices and adapted to releasably engage the other to connect them together, restrained means to actuate said web severing device, means associated with said rockable member to release said restrained severing device actuating means, and means to rock said rockable member.
12. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting device, a web severing device, said devices being movable in the same direction, a rockable member pivoted to one of said devices and adapted to releasably engage the other to connect them together, restrained means to actuate said web severing device, means associated with said rockable member to release said restrained severing device actuating means, and an electrically energized solenoid adapted to act on said rockable member to actuate the same.
13. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflecting device, a web severing device, said devices being movable in the same direction, a latch pivoted to one of said devices and adapted to releasably engage the other to connect them together, restrained means to' actuate said web severing device, means operable by said latch to release said restrained severing device actuating means, an electrically energized solenoid adapted to act on said latch to actuate the same, a circuit interrupter in circuit with said solenoid, and mechanical means to actuate said circuit interrupter to control the operation of said solenoid.
14. In a web supply mechanism, means to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll, means to sever the running web, means to connect said deflecting and said severing means, including a latch member on one of said means and a part on the other engageable by said latch, means to actuate said web severing means, a rockable lever to restrain said actuating means, and means to release said latch during one revolution of the replacement roll and to rock said lever to release said actuating means during the next revolution of the roll.
15. In a web supply mechanism, means to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll, means to sever the running web, means to connect said means, including a latch member on one of said means and a part on the other engageable by said latch, means to actuate said web severing means, a rockable lever to restrain said actuating means, an electrically operated solenoid adapted to rock said latch to release the same, connectable means between said latch and said lever, and means to first energize said solenoid to cause rocking of said latch to release the same and then to energize said solenoid to cause said lever to rock to release the actuating means for said web severing means.
16. In a web supply mechanism, means to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll, means to sever the running web, a rockable catch on said web severing means adapted to engage a member on said web deflecting means to releasably connect said means, a restrained spring to actuate said web severing means, a rockable lever adapted to release the spring, connectable means between said catch and said lever, and a solenoid having a movable core, said core being adapted to release said catch when first acted upon by said solenoid and to actuate said'connectable means to rock said lever and release said spring when again acted upon by said solenoid.
17. In a web supply mechanism, means to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll, means to sever the running web, a rockable catch on said web severing means adapted to engage a member on said web deflecting means to releasably connect said means, a restrained spring to actuate said web severing means, a rockable lever adapted to release said spring to actuate said web severing member, connectable means between said catch and said lever, a solenoid having a movable core, said core being adapted to release said catch when first acted upon by said solenoid, and to actuate said connectable means to rock said lever and release said spring when next acted upon by said solenoid, and means operable in timed relation with the rotation of the replacement roll to energize said solenoid during successive rotations of said roll.
18. In a web feeding device adapted to change the web lead running to a machine, from an expiring roll to a replacement roll, a web deflector adapted to press the running web against the replacement roll, a web severing device, electro-responsive means to time the operation of the web deflector and the severing device, and
a timing device rotatable with the replacement roll and adapted to actuate the electro-responsive means to time the operation of the web deflector during one rotation of said timing device and to time the operation of the severing device during its next rotation.
19. In web supply mechanism, a swingable arm having means thereon to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll, means to releasably retain said arm, a manually operable member for moving said arm, and a resilient member to connect said arm and said member whereby, upon actuation of said manually operable member, said arm will be placed under urge of said resilient member and when released for movement by said retaining means will engage and deflect the running web.
20. In a web supply mechanism, a web engaging and deflecting means including, a swingably mounted arm, releasable means to maintain said arm against movement, an electrically actuated member for releasing said means to permit movement of said arm, an electrical control for said member, a device for moving said arm including, a manually operable member and a resilient connection between said last named member and said arm, and a separately manually operable part associated with said manually operable member to actuate said electrical control.
21. In a web supply mechanism, a first means to engage and deflect a running web toward a replacement roll, an operating member, a releasable means normally restraining movement of the said first means, and a second means resiliently connecting the first means and the operating member, whereby the operating member may be moved to bias the first means toward operating position, and when said first means is released, it will operate to deflect the running web without additional movement of the operating member.
22. In a web supply mechanism, in combination, a restrained swingable device mounted to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll when released, a manually movable member, means to connect said member to said device including a spring, said member when moved in one direction being adapted to tension said spring to impose a pull upon said device to swing it toward the replacement roll, and means to release said device.
23. In a web supply mechanism, in combination, a restrained swingable device mounted to engage and deflect a running web toward a rotating replacement roll when released, a manually movable member, means to connect said member to said device including a spring, said member when moved in one direction being adapted to tension said spring to impose a pull upon said device to swing it toward the replacement roll, means to release said device, and means to limit the operating movement of said member,
position, means to release said retaining means,
a movable member, means to connect said member to said device including a spring, said member when moved to an operative position being adapted to cause said spring to impose a pull upon said device toward the replacement roll, and means adapted to be operated to cause actuation of said releasing means after said member is moved to its operative position.
25. In a web suppy mechanism having means to press a running web against a replacement web roll and to sever the said web, an actuating device, a deflecting member operable to press the web against the roll, a severing member operable to sever the web, and means actuated by the actuating device and in timed relation with the rotation of the replacement roll to first effect operation of the deflecting member and to subsequently effect operation ofthe severing member.
26. In a web supply mechanism, a web deflector adapted to press the web running from an expiring roll against the surface of a replacement web roll, a severing device adapted to sever the web of the expiring roll, means to bias the web deflector into web pressing position, means to bias the web severing device into web severing position, means to restrain the web deflector, means to restrain the web severing device, and electriated web severing device, and electric switch web deflector to cause it to engage the runningweb, a restrained mechanism to actuate said web severing device, means to release said mechanisms, and control means including timing means rotating with the replacement roll to effect the successive actuation of said releasable and restrained mechanisms.
