GARTUN CUTTER Park L.- Newbold, Cedar Rapids, Iowa:
AppHca/tionJune1 1948} Serial Nb. 3159f.
This invention relates to a device for cutting: cigarette cartons open. for stamping the packages of; cigarettes therein. or, other purposes to whichit may be adapted.
It is-the object of my invention to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction that will lessen the: work and; increase the speed of this necessary procedure in'the process of placing state tax stamps on cigarettes.
Another object of my invention is: to provide a machine that eliminates the; slow hand cutting process of. opening the cartons.
Other and. further features and object of the invention will be more apparent to those skilled in the art upon a consideration of the accompanying drawings and following specifications, wherein is disclosed a single exemplary embodiment of the invention with the understanding, however, that such changes may be made therein as fall within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device when viewed from the front and shows in particular the main frame, revolving table and cutting assembly.
Figure 2 is a perspective rear view showing the operating levers and pedal.
Figure 3 is a side View and illustrates in particular the movement of the handle and pedal.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the cutting knives and operating mechanism when viewed from above.
Figure 5 is a detailed rear View of the cutting assembly and illustrates particularly the actuating levers.
Figure 6 shows in detail the knives and cooperating members with a carton in place to be moved into cutting position.
Figure 7 is a view showing the related action of members 52 and 53.
Referring now to the drawings, a preferred embodiment of my invention includes a frame generally indicated at H], and a cutting assembly generally indicated at H. The frame I!) comprises angle-iron upright members l2, cross members l4, base members l3, and suitable brace members l5. At one corner of the frame a revolvably mounted table I'I, strengthened by braces I8, is supported by upright member I6. The cutting assembly It is supported above the adjacent edge of the table IT by two of the upright frame members l2, and is braced by member l9. Cross member 9 connects the upper ends of the two supporting members l2, and supports the operating mechanism to be described. Sup- 3 Claims: (C12 KIT-2 portedon' a vertical continuation of one upright member f2- are; a horizontally extending base bar 20, cross supports 22 intermediate the ends of bar 25', member 23 connecting the outer ends of supports 22", cross bars 2| adjacent the ends of bar 20, and grooved bars 253 and 21 joining the inner ends of bars 21" and 22; Between the inner ends of supports 22, two horizontally movable triangularly shaped cutters: 8 are supported. by arms 30, and are actuated" by sliding. arm members 29- havingguide portions 34, which are: slidably received in the grooves '35 in the grooved bars 26- and 21; Pivot'ally attached at 32 to base bar 20, are: two operating levers 31;;fioatihgl-y connected at 33 to members 2-9-and enclosed by covers 60, see: Fig. 4. Two return springs 33, attached, between the pivots 32 and sliding connections 33, to levers 3|, and to members 64, urge the blades 28 togethher as will be apparent. Rods 39 connect levers 3| to bell crank levers 31, which are pivoted at 38 to upstanding ears on cross member 9, and rods 42 connect the lower shorter arms of the bell crank levers to a U- shaped member 40, which is pivoted at 4|, to the continuation of frame member l2.
Adjacent to, but in back of the cutters 28 a carton receiving platform is supported on bar 20. Forming a back for the platform 55 a movable member 41 is fastened at 49 to a rearwardly extending arm 48. Arm 48 is movable in slides 50 and is pivoted to lever 5| which in turn is pivoted at 63 to cross member 9. Return spring 54, attached to the frame and to arm 48, urges member 41 into a rearward position. The lower end of lever 5| carries a cam plate which extends into bearing relation with a pin 52 on the arm 43. The arm 43 is pivoted on the frame and extends forwardly, passing close to the U-shaped member 40, and is adapted to contact at 62 the member 40, thus forming a lost motion connection between arm 43 and member 40. The forward end of arms 43 carries a handle for operating the machine. Immediately below cutters 28 and carried by member 9, is a receiving platform 51 having guides 58 and holding springs 59. Pivotally attached to a base member of the frame In is a foot lever 44, connected by rod 45 to the arm 43, so that either foot or hand operation of the machine may be achieved.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The operator takes a carton of cigarettes (H from the table I! and places it on the platform 55, as shown in Figure 6. Lever 43 is depressed,
members 30. Cutters 28 will enter between the two flaps comprising the top of the carton. Further movement of lever 43 causes the cutters to separate, through the action of member 40, rods 42, bell cranks 31, rods 39, levers 3|, guides 34, and arms 30, to unseal the flaps and cut their ends from the carton. When the cutters have completely cut through, the supporting members 30 likewise clear the carton base and permit it to drop into ','r eceiving platform 51. When the lever 43 is released the return spring 46 will return it to initial position, and springs 36 and 54 will return their respective parts to initial position. Y
I claim as my invention:
1. In a carton cutting machine the combination of a frame composed of upright, cross, and side members, braces, a cutting assembly attached to said frame and composed of a main,
base, right and left grooved members placed parallel to the main base and supportedby cross members thereto, cutting blades and cooperating support members attached to arms, said arms adapted to move within and between the right and left grooved members, lever arms pivotally connected to the main base bar and adapted to efiect movement of the blade arms, return springs, a pair of L-shaped lever arms pivotally attached to a frame member, connecting members between said L-shaped levers and blade operating levers, a U-shaped member pivotally attached to a supporting member, connectin members between the U and L levers, means for actuating said U-shaped member a press memb'er centrally placed between the right and left 4 grooved member and adapted to move fore and aft, said member being actuated by a hand lever and a return spring, an adjustable carton receiving member, a discharge base with guides and tension springs attached thereto.
2. In a carton cutting machine, the combination of a frame, to which is attached a cutting assembly composed of a frame, a pair of blades and supports so disposed that the blades move in opposite directions, actuating levers and springs for same, a press member centrally placed and adapted to move laterally to the blades, operating means for same, a carton receiving mem- -ber so placed that the press moves within, and
