478,460. Kinematograph apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Feb. 12, 1937, No. 4292. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1936. [Class 97 (i)] In continuous-feed kinematograph apparatus the illumination is provided by at least one artificially cooled high pressure metal vapour discharge tube with narrow linear discharge path so arranged relatively to the condenser system and compensating mirror that the image or images of the discharge path or paths is or are formed in or near the mirror. Preferably no shutter is used, the film gate has a height about double picture height, and the lamps are liquid cooled mercury vapour lamps periodically illuminated. As shown in Fig. 1, the film 4 moving over the gate 3 is illuminated by the lamp 1, the discharge path 6 being parallel to the axis 13 of the compensating mirror 7 oscillated by the cam 9. An image of the discharge path is formed by the condenser 2 on the narrow mirror 7. A number of such lamps may be used with separate condensers as shown in Fig. 4. To avoid flicker without a shutter alternating or interrupted direct current may be used and each picture illuminated twice during its passage across the gate, for example by two lamps as in Fig. 4, illuminated alternately by the alternate half cycles of an alternating current.
