Abstract

478,360. Rolling. SENDZIMIR, T. July 16, 1936, No. 19782. Convention date, July 16, 1935. [Class 83 (iv)] The contour of the pass of a rolling-mill 24, 25, Fig. 7, is set by flexing the top roll 24 to take the shape of a flexible gauge, 60 Figs. 16 and 17, set to shape by a series of hand wheels 64 operating spindles 63 and springs 62, while the pass is also adjusted by moving backing rollers 28 in or out by rotating their eccentric shafts 29. The automatic roll flexing means comprises a line of top pressurerollers 49, Figs. 7 and 8, each mounted eccentrically in a support 50 adjusted to take the shape of the flexible gauge 60 as follows ; the gauge strip 60, Fig. 16, actuates levers 67 carrying a contact 69 which on gauge adjustment touch an upper or lower contact 73 or 74 to energize starter solenoids of both motors 57, Fig. 7, which move both wedges 54 to left or right thus operating pins 53 to rock the eccentric mountings 50 to give the desired eccentric adjustment to each support roller 49. The adjustment motors 57 are stopped when a Bowden cable 75 on the wedges 54 slides the contacts 73-74 up or down to break contact with the contact 69. The roll flexing means for pass adjustment may also comprise a series of short backing rollers 27, Fig. 3, which in turn are backed by other rollers 28 adjusted automatically by rocking their eccentric shafts 29 when the toothed quadrants 42 are rocked bv a worm shaft 43 from a motor 44. An endless metal strip 3 is reduced between the rolls 4, the speed of the driven feed and draw off drums 30 and 35 being adjusted to the linear elongation of the strip by the rolls 4 while a jockey drum 39 pulled by a tension cable 42 moves to take up the slack. The drums are provided with a chain of rings &c. 32 to press the strip against the drum to increase the grip but without hindering the movement of the strip owing to the rings being rotated by shafts 85, Fig. 12, rotated by a gear ring 88 fixed on the drum. The chain of rings are pressed on the drum peripheries by fluid pressure cylinders 34, 38. The strip 3 may also be magnetically held to the drums by the effect of windings 96, Fig. 15 set in slots in the drum and magnetizing it thereby. The pressing strip 91 may also be magnetized. Fig. 2 shows a drive 14 for the rolls 4 and the feeding in and draw off rollers 1 and 2, with speed adjustment levers 11 and 12 for the driving belts, while Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), show another mill drive with epicyclic change speed gears for the feed rollers with oil operated motor-generator devices 15, 16. Specifications 423,664 and 478,361 are referred to.
