Description

C. L. TAYLDR. METHOD OF AND APPARATUSFOR STRAIGHTENING ROLLED ENDLE SS BILIQETS.
Z 91 H 7H E .Jw 62 m m P APPUCATION FILED NOV. 5, I919- INVENTOR I ll IIIIHI C. L. TAYLOR.
METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR STRAIGHTENING ROLLED ENDLESS BILLETS. APPLICATIONIYFILED NOV. 5, l9l9- 1,420,785. A PatontedJl me 27,1922.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- INVENTOR Allorm l billet to hold it in place while being out by the saw. After it has been severed transversely, motion is imparted to the feed rolls 20 and 21 to turn the billet, which as shown is supported on the rollers 83 and by the rolls 18-20 and 21, until the cut end has passed the roll 20 and is in engagement with roll 21 as shown in full lines in Figure 1. Power is then applied to screw 12 to turn same in a direction to force the straightening roll 18 against the billet to straighten the same, after which the feed rolls are started and the billet is fed between the feed rolls and the straightening roll. As the billet is straightened, its straight end passes onto the roller table 37 and is carried off by the latter, and may be then rolled into a railroad rail or other article.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having fully described my invention what i I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for straightening rolled endless billets, the combination of a horizontal support for the endless billet, two positively driven feed rolls adapted to engage the inner face of said billet, an idler straightening roll co-acting with said positively driven rolls and adapted to engage the outer face of the billet, means for moving the straightening roll toward and away from the feed rolls, and cutting means movable toward the endless billet for severing the same prior to the movement ofthe billet between the feeding and straightening rolls.
2. In an apparatus for straightening rolled endless billets, the combination of a series of radially disposed horizontal rollers for supporting an endless billet; two positively driven feed rolls to engage one face of said billet, an idler straightening roll to engage the other face of said billet in a plane between the feed rolls, means for moving the straightening roll toward and away from the feed rolls, and a cutter for severing the endless billet prior to the movement of the same between the feeding and straightening roll.
3. In an apparatus for straightening rolled endless billets, the combination of a hori-' zontal support for the endless billet, two positively driven feedrolls to engage one face of the billet, an idler straightening roll engaging the opposite face of the billet in a plane between the two feed rolls, a screw for moving the idler roll toward and away from the feed rolls, a motor and gearing for rotating said screw and a cutter movable toward the billet for severing it prior to its movement between the feeding and straightening rolls.
4. In an apparatus for straightening rolled endless billets, the combination of a series of horizontal supporting rollers arranged to support a ring shaped endless billet, two positively driven vertical shafts each carrying a feed roll, a straightening roll coacting with the feed rolls and located in a plane intermediate the latter, a screw for moving the straightening roll toward and away from r the feed rolls, and a cutter movable toward the billet for severing same.
.5. The method of converting a piece of metal, annular in form, into a straight section, which comprises squeezing a portion of the annular piece between rolls so as to straighten said portion, and then driving the rolls so as to run the piece through the rolls and straighten it from end to end.
6. The method of converting into a straigh section an annulus, transversely slotted at one point, which consists in squeezing av portion of the annulus adjacent the point of the slot between rolls so as to straighten said portion, and then driving the rolls so as to run the piece through the rolls and straighten it from end to end.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLARENCE L. TAYLOR.
