MACHINE FOR FORMING $KELP==IROhL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,120, dated February 19, 1889. Application filed February 27, 1888- Serial No. 265,483. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRIST .UENKEH, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Forming Skelp-lron; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- .Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved device for forming skelp-iron. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same 3 is a vertical. longitudinal section on the line .r of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows sectional views of the blank before and after it passes through various parts of the device.

In the drawings, 2 represents the main power-shaft, which .is provided with a belt or gear wheel, 3, by which power applied to the shaft. Keyed to the shaft 2 is a toothed wheel, 1, and a toothed wheel, 5, the first of which, 1, gears with a toothed wheel, ti, on the shaft 7, while the toothed wheel 5 gears with a wheel, 3, which is loosely mounted on a shaft, 9, situate directly below the shaft 7. Mounted on the shaft 9 by a feather and spline or other similar device a clutch-wheel, 10, having projecting spurs 1] which are adapted to engage with recesses in the side of the wheel 8, the clutch-wheel 10 being arranged to slide on the shaft J and to be thrown in and out of gear by means of the pivoted arm 12 and footlever 13.
Keyed to the shaft 7 is a grooved roller, 1-1, in the groove of which a tongue-roll, 15, fits, which roll is keyed to a shaft, 16, and on which shaft is a toothed wheel, 17, which gears with the toothed wheel (5 on the shaft '7.
The shafts it and it; are connected together by cam crank-arms 1.8, while the shaft 16 is mounted in sliding boxes 19, which fit in suitable vertical ways in the frame-work or housings 20, the purpose of the crank-arn'ls 18 being to elevate and lower the tongue-roll 15. In the rear of the tongue and groove rolls 1-1 and is a U-shaped die, 2l,having a central core, 22, to the rear face of which the mandrel or core-rot 22' is attached. a similar roller, 28, having a similar flange, 5 5 The two shafts 2t and 27 are connected by the two gear-wheels 3O 3 In. rear of the rollers and 28 are two roll ers, and 33, having flanges St on both sides, which form a central groove above and below the mandrel. These rollers are mounted on shafts 35 and 36, which are connected with each other by gear-wheels 37, similar to the gear-wheels 30 and 31. Power is applied to the shafts 24: and from the shaft 7 by means of the. sprocket- wheels 38, 39, and at) and a chain, 1-1, the chain being guided by the roll i2. The rollers 32 and 28 are journaled in sliding bearings in the housings 20 and are provided with screws 4:3, by means of which the position of the rolls above the mandrel may be regulated.
The operation is as follows: Power being applied to the shaft 2, the heated blank in the form shown. in the first part; of Fig. 4 is drawn from the furnace and fed between the rollers 11 15. At this time the foot-lever 13 is depressed, which throws the clutch 10 into gear with the toothed wheel 8, which wheel 8 is geared with the wheel 5 on the shaft 2. This imparts power to the shaft 9, causing it to revolve, and thereby, by means of the crankarms 18, elevates the shaft 16 and the tongueroll 15, which permits the heated blank to pass between the tongue and grooved rolls 14. 8 5 15. On the side of the wheel 8 is a cam, 45, which by the revolution of the wheel comes in contact with the lever-arm 46, which is connected with the foot-lever 13 and lever-arm 12, and also with the clutch 10, and throws the arm it back, which releases the clutch 10 from the wheel 8, at which time the crankarms 18 have brought the tongue-roll down on. the blank which has been inserted between the rollers 1i and 15. These rollers by their revolution-the roller 15 being caused to rotate by the gear-wheel 17feed the blank forward, and at the same time bend it into the shape shown in the second part of Fig. 4. After passing the rollers 14- 15 it-enters the loo die 21 about the mandrel 23, and passes under the rolls 25 29, the flanges of whichbend the blank around the mandrel into the shape shown in the third part of Fig. 4. The skelp then passes between the rollers 32 the flanges of which bend the blank into the shape shown in the fourth part of Fig. 1-, thus forming the completed skelp.
The advantages of my in'iprovement are, that the skelp is rapidly formed without the trouble of drawing, as in the method employed heretofore. It is first bent, instead of twisted, into a regular U shape, and then further bent about a central mandrel, which gives the s'kelp an even and regular shape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to soon re by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for forming skelp-iron, the combination of tongue and groove rollers, a mandrel, a pair of single-flange rollers at one end of the mandrel, and a pair of doubleflanged rollers at the other or delivery end, the mandrel being arranged between the upper and lower members of the two pairs of rollers and sustaining the skelp as it is formed ab0ut it by the rollers, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for forming skelp-iron, the combination of tongue and groove rollers, a shaft for the tongue-ro1ler, movable bearings for said shaft, and crank-connections for said shaft, with a rotary shaft periodically to raise and lower the tongue-roller shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for forming skelp-iron, the combination of a grooved roller, a tongued roller mounted on a vertically-movable shaft, cam crank-arms connected with the movable shaft, a power-shaft, a clutch for connecting the power-shaft with the power mechanism, and a cam for throwing the clutch out of gear, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
