Abstract

478,282. Making heat - transfer apparatus. STANCLIFFE, C. W. July 21, 1936, No. 20142. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XIII] Soldering.-Heat-transfer apparatus comprising parts of different metals one or more of which are made of a metal, such as aluminium, normally unable to take solder, are thermally connected by soldering after first coating the aluminium &c. with a metal such as copper, the parts being in addition rigidly secured together such as by welding or bolting. Coating may be effected by spraying and the parts may be previously sandblasted. A condenser for cooling a fluid such as acetic acid or acetaldehyde by means of brine consists of a two-part flanged and finned aluminium block 1 against which the fluid contacts and provided with grooves 11 to receive copper tubes 10 through which the brine circulates. The parts 1 are first bolted together and the holes 11 reamed out, whereupon the parts are again disassembled and the grooves 11 sandblasted and sprayed with copper and then tinned. They are then reassembled with tinned copper tubes 10 in the grooves and the parts are welded or bolted together and then heated to effect the soldering. A tinned copper member 9 is then soldered to the tubes and secured to the flanges 3 of the blocks 1 and the parts are then dropped into and bolted to the flange 7 of an aluminium casing 6. A copper header 8 is then bolted or screwed to the member 9. According to the Provisional Specification the block 1 may be made of cast iron. Further, fins may be similarly soldered to the dividing wall between two fluids.
