[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 11, 1937.] [Class 60] Elongated articles, for example, table silver, are ground and polished by means of a disc 12, the work 9 being mounted on one arm 7 of a two-armed lever 6, 7 pivoted at 8 to a slide 2 adjustable by handles 4, 5 transversely in a slot, which may be curved, in a carriage 1, which reciprocates in the direction of the arrows 13 to carry the work in contact with the disc. The arm 6 carries a roller 10, pressed by a spring 16 or a weight on to a templet 11 corresponding to the shape of the work, so that this is moved to and from the disc as it is reciprocated ; after each stroke, the slide 2 is adjusted by the handles 4, 5. In a modification, the work carrying arm of the lever is rotatably mounted in the boss of the lever, and in this construction, both faces of the work may be treated, a grinding &c. disc being provided for each face. The templet may be built up of a number of sections placed side by side, and corresponding to different longitudinal sections of the work. In a further modification, the disc 12 is mounted on a frame which oscillates about an axis at right-angles to that of the disc. A number of the machines may be arranged to be driven from a common source, each machine having the number of reciprocations of the work controlled by a cam &c., and each machine being stopped automatically for replacement of the work. The disc 12 may be made of soft leather, felt, or fabric, or fibre brushes may be used. As a grinding and polishing medium, a mixture of powdered pumice, tripoli, and emery, with oil or water may be employed.
