Abstract

477,844. Controlling aeroplanes. MARTIN, J. July 4, 1936, No. 18618. [Class 4] Means for diverting air on to the rudder of an aeroplane when the latter is at a high angle of incidence comprise flaps mounted in advance of the tail unit and normally folded flush with the fuselage but adjustable to laterally projecting positions. Flaps 2, 2, Fig. 2, are hinged longitudinally at 3 to the fuselage 1 and are normally nested against the surface or accommodated in recesses therein. The flaps are maintained in their inoperative position by cables 10 connected to a cockpit control, for instance a hand lever with pawl and ratchet locking means, and are moved outwardly by spring struts 6 when this control is released, Fig. 4.
