Abstract

<PICT:0477646/III/1> <PICT:0477646/III/2> Finely-divided precipitates are obtained by mixing reacting solutions and applying intense compressional wave vibrations to the mixture at the point of contact of the reagents. The apparatus may comprise a thin flat chamber 9, Fig. 1, having one wall 1 adapted to be set into vibration by means of an electromagnet 2, the reagents being admitted by pipes 13, 14 respectively and the reaction product withdrawn at 16. After the separation of the precipitate the liquid may be re-used for dissolving further quantities of one of the reactants. The reacting solutions may be lime water and sodium carbonate for the production of finely divided calcium carbonate, or a silver salt and a halide, to one of which a binder is added, for the production of photographic emulsions. According to a modification finely-divided substances may similarly be produced from reacting gases. For example zinc vapour may be admitted by a pipe 34, Fig. 3, to an open-ended cylinder 32 having perforations 33 for the admission of oxygen. A vibrating diaphragm 31 is fitted at the closed end of the cylinder. Specification 458,872 is referred to.
