Abstract
522,404. Chloramines. WESSANEN'S KONINKLIJKE FABRIEKEN N.V. Dec. 10, 1938, No. 36085. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1937. [Class 1 (ii)] Chloramines, in particular nitrogen trichloride, are prepared by causing gaseous chlorine to act on an aqueous solution of ammonia or an ammonium compound in the presence of a current of inert gas which removes the chloramine, the whole of the operations taking place in a single apparatus. In order to prevent the accumulation of the acid produced in the reaction, water or an alkaline substance may be introduced into the apparatus, excess liquid resulting being removed by an overflow device. Ammonia gas or a solution thereof is suitable for this purpose ; when gaseous ammonia is introduced the inlet point is separated from that of the chlorine by a porous partition. Other basic substances may also be used e.g. sodium hydroxide or carbonate solutions or lumps of calcium carbonate. Other chloramines may also be produced according to the method. Specification 533,404 describes an apparatus suitable for the process.
