Abstract

477,587. Extruding solid carbon dioxide. HESSLING, W. June 30, 1936, No. 18193. [Class 87 (ii)] Solid carbon dioxide is subdivided into a number of deflected streams before or as it issues from the nozzle of a plunger extrusion press to increase the uniformity of its density. As shown in Fig. 1, the carbon dioxide is forced by the plunger 3 through a nozzle 4 which has a, flared portion provided with a conical core 5 supported by partitions 6 to deflect the material. In Fig. 4, the nozzle comprises two rows of holes 10 and deflecting partitions 8, 9 are provided. In the form shown in Fig. 5, liquefied gas is delivered by a nozzle 15 surrounded by an insulating sleeve 16 of glass &c. to prevent the flakes of " snow " being attracted to the walls of the funnel. An enlarged chamber 23 is provided between the plunger and the outlet to render the pressure more uniform. The outlet comprises a series of rings 19 perforated by holes 18 which may be of the same or different diameter. The end of the outlet is closed and provided with a deflecting cone 22. The extruded sticks of carbon dioxide strike plates 24 which break them into pieces which fall into the funnel 25. In a further modification a single plate may be arranged to break the sticks into different lengths.
