Abstract

<PICT:0477463/IV/1> Nitriles are made by treating aliphatic acids, having more than 6 carbon atoms in the molecule, or esters thereof, with gaseous ammonia, with or without catalysts, such as alumina at temperatures below the boiling point of the acid and continuously removing the water formed by the reaction. Ammonia passes into the reaction vessel 1 by pipe 5, the excess together with water and fatty acid vapour &c. passing up the air condenser 6 to a heated catalyst 9 in chamber 7, where fatty acid vapour is reacted. Water vapour is condensed in the water-cooled condenser 11 and the brine-cooled condenser 15, and the dried ammonia recirculated. Pressures of 3 to 50 lb. per sq. in., above atmospheric, and temperatures from 250 to 350 DEG C. may be used. Caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic acids, or mixed acids from, e.g. lard or "garbage grease," or esters, e.g. glycerides, may be treated.
