Abstract
515,963. Acid chlorides. CARPMAEL, A. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 16, 1938, No. 17984. [Class 2(iii)] Chlorides of higher fatty acids are prepared by heating a higher fatty acid containing at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule in the liquid state with phosgene in the presence of charcoal. Charcoal which has been activated by treatment with zinc chloride phosphoric acid, steam '&c. gives the best results and temperatures are preferred between 100‹ and 250‹C. Other catalysts, e.g., alkaline earth metal compounds, may be present. In the examples stearic, palmitic and oleic acids are treated with phosgene at about 150‹G. in the presence of activated charcoal and when the reaction is complete the charcoal is filtered off. Lauric acid is also specified.
