Abstract

477,090. Umbrellas. SIERS, J. A. H. June 26, 1936, No: 17857. [Class 134] An umbrella comprises telescopic stick and ribs, an elastic cover secured to the stick and to the tips of the ribs, and means, which are operated upon movement of the runner, for positively extending and contracting the ribs. The stick comprises telescopic parts 5, 6, Fig. 1, and a leaf spring 9 is mounted in the section 6 and is provided with a lug 11 adapted to project through holes in the parts when extended. A sleeve 16 to which the ribs are pivoted is screwed to the section 5. The cover 34 is clamped to the sleeve by a plate 35 and screw 36, the inner end of which is provided with a conical part and a reduced neck 37. When the stick is collapsed a portion 10 of the spring 9 is pressed into resilient engagement with the neck 37 by means of the stud 101. The ribs 18 are provided with flanges 19, Fig. 2, to hold 'the ribs 20 to which a U-shaped plate 22 is secured by projections. Stretchers 21 are pivoted by rivets 23 to the plate and are U-shaped to house the ribs when the umbrella is collapsed. The other ends of the stretchers are curved and are pivoted to a runner 25, which is locked by means of the spring-biassed member 30, and the upward movement of which is limited by a collar 28. Links 31 are pivoted to the sleeve 16 and to the stretchers. The ribs are secured in the collapsed condition by spring clips 41 located on the rib parts 18 and provided with spring fingers 42 which are engaged by a flange on the handle 14. The links 31 are preferably always parallel to the ribs. In another form, the flanges of the stretchers face the stick to envelop the links 31. The cover may consist of rubberized fabric or of a rubber sheet and is provided at its edge with an inelastic, e.g. silk cord. Strips 47, Fig. 15, are vulcanized to the cover, bear against the inner side of the cord, and hold wire members 48, the bent ends 49 of which may be inserted into apertures in the ends of the ribs 20. A strap for securing the cover when furled is provided at one end with one part of a press fastener and at the other end is secured to a metal stud 53, Fig. 17, which is provided with the other part 54 of the press fastener and is secured within a rubber grommet. in the detachable cover. In a further form, a spring latch 61, Fig. 10, is mounted in a groove in a member 60 which is arranged within the stick part 6. A portion 63 of the latch is adapted to project through aligned apertures in the stick parts 5, 6 to maintain the stick in the collapsed or in the extended condition. To release the latch to expand the stick sections, a spring-biassed plunger 70 is pushed inwardly to engage the face 68 of the latch. Specification 477,376 is referred to.
