Abstract

[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Groups XX, XIII, and XXIX] A number of bimetallic elements of U-shape are together to form a chain sc that the individual deformations are added together. The length of the chain may increase or decrease with increasing temperature. The Figure shows a chain 11 protected by an apertured tube 5 and arranged to operate the electric switch of a fire alarm only on sudden in. creases of temperature. The free end of the chain is attached to a conducting rod 12 carrying one contact 13 and an insulating bush 14 on which slides with a friction fit a conducting disc 15 forming the other contact member. The disc 15 is mounted with slight clearance in a cylinder 16 filled with glycerine so that when the chain 11 alters its length slowly the disc 15 is moved with the bush 14 and contact 13, the glycerine passing round the edge of the disc. Upon sudden changes of the chain's length, the disc is held by the glycerine and slips on the bush 14 so that contact 13 and disc 15 come into engagement.
