Abstract

476,816. Directive wireless signalling. LINK, jun., E. A. June 19, 1936, No. 17069. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Apparatus for instruction and training in flying by wireless directions comprises a manoeuvrable dummy or model aircraft controllable by the student and means for generating and transmitting to the student signals simulating directional " overlapping beam " signals radiated to aircraft in actual flight. The signals are transmitted by means of a circuit comprising an electromagnet 23 which is energized by a battery 21 on closure of a circuit by a rotary contact member 17 provided, as shown, with relatively long and short contact pieces. The battery 21 energizes the primary 34 of a microphone buzzer 34a. A secondary coil 35 co-operates with the coil 34 and includes in its circuit one or other of coils 36, 37 according to the position of a member having contacts 29, 30 carried on resilient arms 27, 28 and which is controlled against the action of a spring 26 by energization of the magnet 23. The contacts are arranged so that during movement of the arm 24 carrying the contacts, the circuit remains closed through the coil 36 until the circuit is closed through the coil 37 and vice versa. The contacts on the wheel 17 are arranged so that, on clockwise rotation of the wheel, primary 37 gives a dash-dot signal and the primary 36 a dot-dash signal. Thus, a dash-dot or dot-dash signal is induced, according to its position, in a secondary 38. If the secondary 38 is adjusted to a mean position a continuous hum is transmitted. The signal current in the coil 38 passes through an amplifier 39 to either or both earphones and a visual indicator 4a. In order that an appropriate station signal may be superimposed, a contact disc 42 is mounted on the shaft 16 and disposed so that the contacts 43 of the disc 42 pass a brush 44 at the same time as a dash is induced in the primary 36 or the primary 37. In order that the wheel 42 may be periodically effective it is adapted to be short-circuited by a contact wheel 46 driven from the motor driving the shaft 16. A microphone 52b is provided whereby the instructor may talk to the pupil.
