476,520. Testing physical qualities of materials. LACY, K. E. R. DE. Oct. 7, 1936, No. 27164. [Class 106 (ii)] Means for testing the spreading of plastic substances on surfaces for instance butter on bread by means of a knife comprises a movable carriage C having an inclined knife K beneath it which is actuated by an adjustable force, weights G, to draw the carriage over the surface S in front of which a specimen of the plastic substance M is to be tested is placed. The carriage runs on rails R and the knife is secured to an inclined surface below the carriage. The surface is provided by a plate of the material placed in a box S in front of which is a box M in which the specimen is placed so as to protrude above the top by using a false top or it is placed in a frame on the surface and is then cut around the edges and the frame removed. The carriage is moved gently forwards until the knife touches the specimen and weights are added at G until the carriage moves. Movement is arrested and weights added to shear the material at a steady rate. The efficiency of spread, depth of the layer, and its continuity are noted.
