Abstract

476,461. Hulling, husking, scouring, and polishing grain &c. ZINSSER, L. Nov. 16, 1936, No. 31249. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1935. Addition to 446,426. [Class 58] [Also in Group II] Inclined discs 1 in a machine for hulling, husking, grinding, scouring, or polishing grain or similar materials instead of being arranged parallel to each other as described in the parent Specification, are arranged on a shaft mutually displaced through an angle in such a manner that in their positions in relation to the shaft similar points of the discs are situated on a helix. The pitch of the helix may be constant or varied and the discs may be at different distances apart. Rings, disc segments or ring segments may be substituted for the discs and the peripheral surface of the elements may be smooth, roughened, serrated or provided with other protrusions and depressions. The edges of the discs may be bevelled or rounded and holes may be provided through the discs. The casing may be cylindrical, conical, oval or polygonal and may have both grinding and brushing surfaces or sieve surfaces ; it may be stationary or rotatable. Portions of the casing may be arranged to swing open or may be omitted. The distance between the elements and the inner surface of the casing may be constant or greater in some places than in others ; it may be reduced or varied by adjusting the elements or the shaft. In the machine shown in Figs. 10, 11, a housing 9 contains stationary casings 10, 19 in which are mounted two shafts 11 carrying the discs 1. The upper casing 10 comprises a husking surface 14, a brushing surface 15 and a sifting surface 16. The husks drop through the sieve 16 into the collecting worm 18. The grain falls from the casing 10 through a passage 13 into the casing 19 where the husking process is repeated, the better quality material escaping through the sieve 20 of the casing is collected bv the worm 22. Moist air or steam can be introduced into the husking chamber which can be immersed in a water bath.
