[Class 58] Cereal grains are husked while passing through the annular space between a fixed perforated cylindrical casing and a rotary grinding drum, the drum being composed of a number of grinding sections between which are arranged intermediate members provided with openings for the passage of air. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a hollow grinding drum is comprised by cylindrical grinding sections 1<1>, 1<2>, &c., these sections being separated by spacing rings 6<1>, 6<2>, &c. that are provided with air openings 7. The drum rotates in a casing 2 provided with openings 5 through which air is aspirated carrying bran &c. from the grain ; the air is drawn into the hollow drum and passes into the husking space through the openings 7. The radial distance between the casing and the drum is preferably between the thickness of 3-4 grains as a minimum and 8-10 as a maximum. The intermediate sections are desirably made of material that wears at the same rate as the grinding sections and the drum is preferably slightly tapered being widest at the delivery end. To equalize the air pressure the interior of the drum may be divided into sections, fitted with guides or the air may be delivered by several pipes. In the modified form of drum shown in Fig. 5, the grinding sections 211, 21<2>, &c. are arranged longitudinally of the drum being spaced apart by air admitting sections 29<1>, 29<2>, &c. The sections may be expanded radially by moving a central -cone member 31 upwards. The rate of progress of the material is controlled by an adjustable outlet. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also modifications in which (a) axially arranged grooves or bars are provided on the drum ; (b) the drum is inclined slightly to the axis of rotation; (c) the drum is of slightly elliptic cross-section ; (f) small projections are arranged on the outside of the drum ; (g) the casing is removable for substitution by a smaller one when the drum wears, the smaller casing fitting into smaller concentric grooves at top and bottom; (h) the drum and the casing may be coned and adjustable axially. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
