[Class 9 (i)] Relates to multiple-action presses for pressing powdered charges such as the priming and tracing charges of projectiles. According to the invention, a uniform pressure is imparted to the several press plungers by means of one or more bellows chambers which are under the action of adjustable hydraulic or pneumatic pressure. In the construction shown, the press comprises two bellows chambers 7, 36, which are filled with liquid and which are connected with each other by a supply conduit. Both bellows are firmly attached to a member 35 extending between the pillars 41 of the press. The upper bellows 36 carries the charges 10 and the lower bellows 7 is adapted to be compressed by means of two cams 5, 6 on a shaft 4. This shaft also carries two end cams 31 engaging with bell-crank levers 32 which' are adapted to impart a vertical reciprocating motion to a pair of bolts 34. The upper ends of the bolts are connected by two cross-bars 38, 39, carrying the press plungers 11. In operation, the plungers are first lowered by the cams 31 to press lightly upon the charges 10, and the pressing is then completed by the bellows under the control of the cams 5, 6. To regulate the pressure exerted by the bellows, a conduit 12 leading therefrom is connected to a third bellows 13, the free end of which carries a roller 15 engaging with a worm 16 on a shaft 16a. An end disc 17 on this shaft is connected by a steel band 18 to one arm of a bell-crank lever 19, the other arm of which carries a movable weight 20. The tendency of the bellows 13 to rotate the shaft 16a is thus resisted by the weight 20, which can be adjusted to control the pressure of the hydraulic system. The cross-bars 38, 39 are adjustably mounted upon the bolts 34, being connected directly to bushes 30 which are threaded on the bolts and which are rotated, for adjustment purposes, by gearing 28, 29, actuated by a hand wheel 43. The press plungers are arranged upon a system of levers and coact with springs 42 in such manner that the same predetermined pressure is applied to the charges even if one or more of the charges be missing. Visible or audible signalling devices may be provided to indicate the absence of any of the charges.
