Breaking-pieces for relieving strain. - A readily-replaceable overload-release. device for the adjusting-screws of rubber.mixing mills &c. comprises a glass, cast-iron, or other frangible disc C of known strength, held by a cap-nut C<1> and packing c in a terminal recess b<2> of the adjusting-screw B and subjected to oil or other fluid pressure. The screw B, engaging a bush nut A integral with' or secured in the machine frame, receives in a bore b a fluid-tight plunger D, which presses on one bearing of the roller, the space d<1> being filled with oil &c. through a, plugged orifice a, a similar orifice allowing escape of air. The bore b communicates with the recess b<2> by a small passage b<1>. When the disc C breaks, the fragments are confned in the nut C', through perforations in which the fluid escapes.
