Abstract

474,422. Reinforced concrete. GRIFFEL, H. April 28, 1936, No. 12097. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1935. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 22, 1937.] [Class 20 (iv)] A non-circular reinforcing member for reinforced concrete structures is made of steel having a high yield point, and the cross-section thereof is derived from the cross-section of a normal circular iron reinforcing member of diameter d, and is produced by removing from the circle two opposite lens-like segments by arcs having the same radius as, or a smaller radius than, the circle. The resultant crosssection has an area which is smaller in the desired proportion to the area of the complete circle, but has a periphery which is greater than or equal thereto, whereby the non-circular steel reinforcing member is adaptable for higher allowable stresses and is exchangeable directly for the circular iron reinforcing member, that is without any further calculation or alteration of plan. In the construction shown, the concave portions y each extend through an angle B=87‹14' and each has a radius r<1> which is equal to the radius r of the circle. In a modification, the edges between the concave and convex parts are rounded off. In another modification, ribs bridging the concave portions, are arranged at spaced intervals along the bar, and according to a further construction, the bar is twisted around its longitudinal axis. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a number of other reinforcing bars of non-circular cross-section. According to one construction, the bar is of elliptical cross-section and in other constructions the bars are substantially rectangular in section and have rounded corners or rounded ends. In another construction, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), the cross-section of the bar is derived from a circle of diameter d and comprises five convex portions of radius r which merge into five concave portions of radius r<1> ; other similar bars are described which differ only in the number of the concave and convex portions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
