Abstract
474,255. Vehicle seating-arrangements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PATMORE, S. J. May 19, 1936, No. 14179. [Class 103 (ii)] A rail vehicle, for example, an electric tramcar, is provided with rotary seats together with common means for effecting simultaneous rotation of a plurality of seats to cause them to face forwardly. The invention is shown applied to a double-deck tramcar having bucket - type seats on each floor similarly arranged in pairs on each side of a central gangway, each seat 2 being supported by a hollow pillar 3 which encloses a vertical spindle 4 coupled both to the seat and, by means of a gear 8 and worm-gearing (not shown), to a horizontal shaft 5 common to adjacent pairs of seats and extending the length of the car. Each shaft 5 is connected to a single driving motor 1 by shafts 6, 7 and gears 10. The motor is controlled by a press-button or equivalent switch and in operation, after the seats have been rotated through approximately 180‹, the motor may be stopped by a limit switch or may be adapted to operate automatically a reversing switch which reverses the direction of rotation of the motor when it is next operated. If desired, the seats may have a limited rotational movement relatively to the spindles 4 under the control of the occupants.
