UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT SOHMID, OF HAVRE, FRANCE.
DRIVING MECHANISM OF MOTOR-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,1 13, dated December 1902- Application filed January 28,1902. Serial No. 91.607. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALBERT SOHMID, acit-izen of the United States of America, residing at 3 Rue Vacquerie, St. Adresse, Havre, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Driving Mechanism of Motor-Oars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of the driving mechanism of a motor-car in such a manner that the gearing is of simple character and the speed and direction of motion can be readily controlled, as I shall describe, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side View, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan of a motor-car with driving mechanism according to my invention, and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the electrical connections.
a is an internal-combustion engine which may have three cylinders, as shown, and b is a dynamo-machine, the armature of which is fixed on the shaft of the engine, which can be started in the usual way by means of a handle working a ratchet. The dynamo b has two commutators c c, the brushes of which can be connected in series or in parallel, transmitting currents to Work a pair of electric motors d d, the speed and direction of the rotation of which are determined by a controller e. The motors d d have brackets f, sleeved upon the axle g, and are also connected by spring-bars 7t 71 to the beams 1111, on which the engine and dynamo are carried. On the shafts of the motors d d are pinions jj, gearing with toothed wheels 7c 70, fixed on thedriving-wheels Z Z. On the shafts of the motors are brake-drums m m, and also on the driving-wheels are brake-drums n n, on which bear brake-blocks that can be worked in any convenient known manner.
The electrical connections are shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3. In this figure, G G are the two commutators of the dynamo, S S the series, and O C the shunt field-coils,which for clearness are shown as if separated. B represents the contacts arranged in a row at one side of the controller A, which is illustrated as if developed, with its conducting segment arranged so that as it is turned to different positions it connects with some or others of the contacts B. M M are the commutators of the two motors, and F F the fieldcoils of these motors.
It is to be understood that the engine, the dynamo worked by it, and the electric motor or motors, as well as the controller which governs them, may all be of suitable known kinds, to which separately I make no claim;
but,
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is Motor-car driving mechanism comprising an internalcombustion engine, a dynamo having a double-wound armature and driven by said engine, said dynamo having two commutators and two sets of brushes, a pair of electric motors connected to the dynamo and arranged to drive the vehicle, and a controller arranged to change the connections of the dynamo; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT SOHMID.
