Abstract
474,157. Windscreen.-cleaners. BURNSIDE, J. April 21, 1936, No. 11384. [Class 138 (i)] A windscreen-cleaner comprises one or more wiper blades adapted to be rotated continuously each about an axis at or near the edge of the screen so that the blade passes over the screen for approximately half each revolution, and passes on and off the screen without fouling the edge thereof. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the wiper blade 5 is pivotally connected at 15 to the spindle 4 of a motor 1 which is mounted on a bracket 6 adjustably secured on the screen by pins and slots and a wing nut 9. The bracket 6 has a cam surface 13 adapted, on rotation of the wiper, to be engaged by a ball 16 secured to the mounting 14 for the wiper blade. In a modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the framing 19 is set back from the screen 20 so that the cam surface is unnecessary. The wiper is double-bladed and shaped so that the rotation of the blades is assisted by the flow of air as the vehicle moves forward. The blade spindle is slotted for engagement by a pin on the forked end of a bell-crank lever 37 whereby the blades when not in use may be placed in unobtrusive horizontal position. The wiper may be adapted to drive, through a belt and pulley, a second double-bladed wiper which is adjustable to vary the tension of the belt.
