Abstract

473,979. Sterilizing liquids; filters. WELKER, J. P. April 23, 1936, No. 11593. [Class 46] [Also in Group VI] A sterilizing-metal is deposited within the foremost layers of a filtering element of clay, infusorial earth, charcoal, &c., the other layers being free from metal. The metals may be used alone, in alloys or amalgamated with mercury. The surface of the element may be covered with the metal. Fig. 2 shows a hollow element of infusorial earth and charcoal to which clay has been added as cement. The element is surrounded by one or more layers 3 of wire netting made of active metal. Active metal is also deposited on the surface of the element by electroplating. The outer layer 4 is impregnated with active metal which may be incorporated therein during manufacture either as powdered metal or as a salt, which is reduced during burning of the element or by treatment with a reducing element such as hydrochinone. Or the layer 4 may be treated with a solution of metallic salt after manufacture. The inner layer 5 of the filtering element is free from metal. As shown in Fig. 1, the element is arranged to close the mouth of a bottle or rubber bag which contains the liquid to be treated. The element when not in use may be protected by a metal tube which will serve as a drinking cup.
