Abstract
473,920. Speed indicators. CHANDLER, E. H. July 20, 1936, No. 20027. Convention date, July 22, 1935. [Class 106 (iii)] The speed at which a vehicle is being driven is automatically indicated at the front and rear of the vehicle by a series of differently coloured lamps 4, 5, 6 which are successively lighted and extinguished as the vehicle passes from one speed range to the next. The lamp box is provided with hoods 12, lenses 10, and reflectors 9, and the lamp circuits are closed by the selective attraction of armature contacts 22, 23, 24 by electromagnets 29, 30, 31. Locking latches 36, 37, 38 for these contacts are released by the action of electromagnets 40, 41, 42. The speed-responsive control device comprises a pivoted wiper 63 movable by a centrifugal governor 71 over banks of contacts, the governor being driven from the gear-box 61 or other moving part of the vehicle. The Specification includes circuit diagrams for the above-mentioned construction and also for (a) a construction wherein the lifting of any one locking latch releases directly by a rock-shaft all the other latches, and (b) a construction wherein each speed range is subdivided into two groups by the use of two lamps of the same colour adapted to be lighted simultaneously.
