Abstract
Pure zinc sulphide is prepared by dissolving commercially pure zinc sulphate in twice distilled water, electrolysing with platinum electrodes for two weeks at two volts, boiling several times with adsorption carbon, filtering, adding ammonia dissolved in twice distilled water, filtering, and introducing hydrogen sulphide, prepared from iron sulphide and hydrochloric acid and washed in dilute hydrochloric acid water, potassium hydrosulphide, and twice distilled water. A small quantity of hydrogen sulphide is first introduced and the precipitate is filtered off, dried, heated with a flux to 400 DEG C., and tested by means of cathode rays. The partial precipitation is continued until the blue luminescence does not vary with further samples. The whole quantity of zinc salt is then precipitated as zinc sulphide, and after filtering and drying heated with pure sulphur in a hydrogen atmosphere to 400 DEG C. Cadmium sulphide may be similarly prepared, the control test being made on precipitated samples mixed with appropriate quantities of the pure zinc sulphide.
